About the Lab

Professor Dae Sik Kim's research lab focuses on clinical and translational research in diagnostic radiology, medical oncology, and infectious diseases. The lab investigates advanced imaging techniques for accurate differentiation of brain tumors, explores biomarkers such as the modified platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (MPI) for predicting survival in multiple myeloma, and examines the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of emerging infectious agents like *Laribacter hongkongensis*. The lab also contributes to understanding immune-mediated disorders such as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), with an emphasis on novel therapeutic targets and disease mechanisms.

Myeloma prognostic index at diagnosis might be a prognostic marker in patients newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma
Dae Sik Kim, Eun Sang Yu, Ka‐Won Kang, Se Ryeon Lee, Yong Park, Hwa Jung Sung, Chul Won Choi, Byung Soo Kim
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aims of this study were to identify the value of inflammatory markers as pretreatment prognostic factors for patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and to estimate the value of a prognostic index including these markers at diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 273 newly diagnosed MM patients undergoing active treatment were analyzed in this study. The prognostic values for survival of the pretreatment inflammatory markers were investigated. A myeloma prognostic index (MPI) was derived

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Laribacter hongkongensis is an emerging pathogen in patients with community-acquired gastroenteritis and traveler's diarrhea. We herein report a case of L. hongkongensis infection in a 24-yr-old male with liver cirrhosis complicated by Wilson's disease. He was admitted to a hospital with only abdominal distension. On day 6 following admission, he complained of abdominal pain and his body temperature reached 38.6℃. The results of peritoneal fluid evaluation revealed a leukocyte count of 1,180/µL

Recent advances in treatments of adult immune thrombocytopenia
Dae Sik Kim
SJR Q2Blood ResearchOA

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is isolated thrombocytopenia characterized by autoimmune-mediated disruption of platelet without other etiologies. Treatments for chronic ITP consist of corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulins, anti-D immunoglobulin, rituximab, thrombopoietin receptor agonists, immunosuppressants and splenectomy. Although current therapies are effective in over two-thirds of patients, some patients are refractory to therapies or fail to achieve long-term responses. Recently, gr

Five factor score of more than 1 is associated with relapse during the first 2 year‐follow up in patients with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis
Dae Sik Kim, Jason Jungsik Song, Yong‐Beom Park, Sang‐Won Lee
SJR Q3International Journal of Rheumatic DiseasesOA

AIM: We investigated what variables at diagnosis might be associated with the relapse of eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) and whether five factor score (FFS) at diagnosis might predict it. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 30 patients with EGPA having results of myeloperoxidase (MPO)-antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and proteinase 3 (PR3)-ANCA and having achieved remission during the first therapeutic regimen administration within follow-up duration for

The present results suggest that the T-C-T-C haplotype of the PIM-1 gene could influence the risk of developing smoking-related lung cancer in the Korean population. Additional functional studies with an larger sample sized analysis are warranted to reconfirm our findings.

BACKGROUND: Despite the advances in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) treatment, the prognosis of elderly patients remains poor and no definitive treatment guideline has been established. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of intensive chemotherapy in elderly AML patients and to determine which subgroup of patients would be most responsive to the therapy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 84 elderly patients: 35, 19, and 30 patients were administered intensive chemotherap

High-Dose Cytarabine Consolidation (≥1.5 g/m2) Might Have Shown a Better Outcomes Than Intermediate-Dose Cytarabine (1.0 g/m2) Combined With Anthracyclines In AML Patients Who Had Achieved Complete Remissions In The First Induction by Standard 3+7 Regimen

SJR Q1Blood

Abstract Purpose Based on CALGB trial in 1994, 3-4 cycles of high-dose cytarabine have been one of the standard consolidation therapies. Despite the confirmed efficacy of anthracyclines for remission induction, the role of anthracyclines for postremission consolidation is a subject still under debate. In this retrospective analysis, we compared the efficacy of high-dose cytarabine (>=1.5 g/m2) and intermediate-dose cytarabine (1 g/m2) combined with anthracyclines as postremission therapy. Met

Use of deferasirox, an iron chelator, to overcome imatinib resistance of chronic myeloid leukemia cells
Dae Sik Kim, Yoo Jin Na, Myoung Hee Kang, Soo‐Young Yoon, Chul Won Choi
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has achieved impressive success since the development of the Bcr-Abl tyrosine kinase inhibitor, imatinib mesylate. Nevertheless, resistance to imatinib has been observed, and a substantial number of patients need alternative treatment strategies. METHODS: We have evaluated the effects of deferasirox, an orally active iron chelator, and imatinib on K562 and KU812 human CML cell lines. Imatinib-resistant CML cell lines were created b

Growth and Characterization of a Multi-dimensional ZnO Hybrid Structure on a Glass Substrate by using Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition
김대식, Dohan Lee, Je-Haeng Lee, 변동진

A multi-dimensional zinc oxide (ZnO) hybrid structure was successfully grown on a glass substrateby using metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The ZnO hybrid structure wascomposed of nanorods grown continuously on the ZnO film without any catalysts. The growthmode could be changed from a two-dimensional (2D) film to one-dimensional (1D) nanorods bysimply controlling the substrate’s temperature. The ZnO with a hybrid structure showed improvedelectrical and optical properties. The ZnO
