About the Lab
Professor Daehee Kang's research lab focuses on the molecular and genetic epidemiology of chronic diseases, particularly cancer and metabolic disorders. The lab investigates gene-environment interactions, genetic susceptibility variants (e.g., SOD, GSTM1, GSTT1, COMT), and biomarkers of exposure (e.g., PAH-DNA adducts, 1-OHP-gluc) to understand how genetic polymorphisms and environmental factors contribute to disease risk. Their work spans population-based studies, including large-scale GWAS and case-control designs, with a strong emphasis on Asian populations, especially Koreans, to address genetic and environmental disparities in disease etiology. The lab integrates molecular epidemiology with clinical and biochemical markers to identify early indicators and risk modifiers for cancer and metabolic syndrome.

A case-control study was performed to assess the potential influence of catechol O-methyl transferase (COMT) genotype on the risk of breast cancer in Korean women. A case-control study was performed to assess the potential influence of CYP19 Arg(264)Cys and CYP1B1 Leu(432)Val polymorphisms on breast cancer risk in a series of Korean breast cancer patients and controls. The results suggest that the CYP19 Arg(264)Cys polymorphism modifies breast cancer risk (OR=1.5, 95% CI=1.1-2.2), especially in association with alcohol consumption (P for interaction=0.04), whereas the CYP1B1 Leu(432)Val polymorphism appears to play no role here.
