About the Lab

Professor Damhee Kim's research lab focuses on the intersection of social media, political behavior, and democratic engagement. The lab investigates how online political expression, information exposure, and social learning on digital platforms shape citizens’ political self-concepts, information sharing behaviors, and offline civic participation. Key research directions include the psychological and behavioral dynamics of political engagement on social media, the role of selective exposure and avoidance in shaping political discourse, and the impact of media diversity on political knowledge and participation. The lab employs longitudinal survey data and theoretical frameworks from political psychology and communication studies to explore the mechanisms linking digital media use to democratic citizenship.

Brian E. Weeks, Daniel S. Lane, Dam Hee Kim, Slgi S. Lee, Nojin Kwak
SJR Q1Journal of Computer-Mediated CommunicationOA

Political information sharing in social media offers citizens opportunities to engage with news and express their political views, but how do different patterns of online political information exposure, including both incidental and selective exposure, affect sharing? Using two-wave panel survey data collected in the United States, we examine the relationship between incidental and selective exposure and their consequent links to political information sharing, across different levels of strength

Social Media Expression and the Political Self
Daniel S. Lane, Slgi S. Lee, Fan Liang, Dam Hee Kim, Li-Wei Shen, Brian E. Weeks, Nojin Kwak
SJR Q1Journal of Communication

Expression has the power to shape how we see ourselves. In this paper, we argue that the dynamics of political expression on social media can influence not only political behavior, but also citizens’ more fundamental political self-concepts. Specifically, political expression on social media can entail a public commitment to a political self-presentation, which may lead individuals to perceive themselves as politically active, interested, efficacious, and knowledgeable. Analyzing panel survey da

From observation on social media to offline political participation: The social media affordances approach
Dam Hee Kim, Nicole B. Ellison
SJR Q1New Media & Society

Building on prior studies suggesting that social media can facilitate offline political participation, this study seeks to clarify the mechanism behind this link. Social media may encourage social learning of political engagement due to their unique affordances such as visibility (i.e. once-invisible political activities by others are now visible on social media feeds). By analyzing a two-wave survey conducted before the 2016 presidential election in the United States, this study tests a theoret

Why Do People Share Political Information on Social Media?
Dam Hee Kim, S. Mo Jones-Jang, Kate Kenski
SJR Q1Digital Journalism

This study investigates factors predicting political information sharing on social media in the election context. Specifically, the current study examines how users’ six motivations for political information sharing and exposure to political disagreement on social media predict their political information sharing behaviors. Analyses of national survey data collected before the 2018 U.S. midterm election suggest that criticism, informing, and socialization motivations, but not expression, awarene

Unfriending and Muting During Elections: The Antecedents and Consequences of Selective Avoidance on Social Media
Dam Hee Kim, S. Mo Jones-Jang, Kate Kenski
SJR Q1Mass Communication & SocietyOA

Although selective avoidance, commonly practiced as unfriending and muting on social media, has been assumed to be at odds with the democratic ideal of deliberation, academic literature says little about its antecedents and consequences. Drawing from the framework of psychological needs for information processing, we examine whether need for cognition and need to evaluate interact to predict selective avoidance, which then facilitates political expression on social media. Analyses of a two-wave

Media Diversity Policies for the Public: Empirical Evidence Examining Exposure Diversity and Democratic Citizenship
Dam Hee Kim, Nojin Kwak
SJR Q1Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media

The pursuit of media diversity as a policy goal finds its foundation in First Amendment values which assume that the public welfare requires broad dissemination of information from diverse and antagonistic sources. Using 5 waves of panel data collected during the 2008 presidential campaign in the U.S., this article empirically examines the assumption that seeking diverse and antagonistic viewpoints reflects good citizenship. The results suggest that heavy consumption of liberal and conservative

Sharing and Commenting Facilitate Political Learning on Facebook: Evidence From a Two-Wave Panel Study
Dam Hee Kim, Brian E. Weeks, Daniel S. Lane, Lauren B. Hahn, Nojin Kwak
SJR Q1Social Media + SocietyOA

Social media, as sources of political news and sites of political discussion, may be novel environments for political learning. Many early reports, however, failed to find that social media use promotes gains in political knowledge. Prior research has not yet fully explored the possibility based on the communication mediation model that exposure to political information on social media facilitates political expression, which may subsequently encourage political learning. We find support for this

Explaining the Diversity Deficit: Value-Trait Consistency in News Exposure and Democratic Citizenship
Dam Hee Kim, Josh Pasek
SJR Q1Communication Research

Although scholars consider it important for citizens to seek diverse information to optimize citizenship, a growing body of research suggests that many people predominantly expose themselves to information that confirms their previous beliefs. Using four waves of survey data from an online panel of 2,450 Americans, this study explores a disconnect between information values and practices to identify (1) whether citizens exemplify the diversity-seeking values endorsed in communication scholarship

Brand Extension Strategies in the Film Industry: Factors behind Financial Performance of Adaptations and Sequels
Dam Hee Kim
SJR Q3The International Journal on Media Management

In the film industry, which is notoriously high risk, sequels and adaptations stand out as successful films. Conceptualizing adaptations and sequels as extended brands, this paper takes an in-depth look at brand extension strategies in the film industry by analyzing films released from 2010 to 2013 in the U.S. This paper puts forward five adaptations types by their source materials (i.e., adaptations from video games; TV series; toy lines; comic books; and books), and examines which types of ada

Are Social Media Worth It for News Media?: Explaining News Engagement on Tumblr and Digital Traffic of News Websites
Dam Hee Kim, Meera Desai
SJR Q3The International Journal on Media Management

News organizations, faced with financial challenges in transitioning to a digital era, have embraced social media to attract an audience. Little, however, is empirically known regarding which factors generate engagement on social media to drive traffic to dedicated news websites. To answer this question, digital traffic of top 50 news organizations and 230,375 posts made by 41 accounts of these organizations on a social media platform, Tumblr, were analyzed. The results suggest that both still a

Diversity Policies in the Media Marketplace: A Review of Studies of Minority Ownership, Employment, and Content
Dam Hee Kim
SJR Q2SHILAP Revista de lepidopterologíaOA

Achieving diversity has long been a goal of U.S. communications policy. However, the diversity and minority preferences governing the Federal Communications Commission’s broadcast ownership policies have been challenged on the basis of doubts concerning the assumed nexus of minority ownership, a diverse workforce, and content: the triangle. Acknowledging the lack of consensus regarding whether the triangle actually exists, this article reviews previous studies (the majority of which adopted quan

How Do Silent Trolls Become Overt Trolls? Fear of Punishment and Online Disinhibition Moderate the Trolling Path
Daniel Montez, Dam Hee Kim

Digital media allow users the ability to engage in and be exposed to trolling. Although many people may enjoy the occasional opportunity to witness others being trolled, a relative minority directly troll others, those whom we can label overt trolls. Nevertheless, features afforded on social media and online communities (e.g., likes, upvotes) make it accessible for people to positively react to and support trolling, becoming supportive trolls, a potential steppingstone into overt trolling. What types of films are successful at the box office? Predicting opening weekend and non-opening gross earnings of films
Dam Hee Kim
SJR Q2Journal of Media Business Studies

Although the film industry is high risk, sequels and films adapted from novels or comic books can be financially successful because they can capitalise on the established brands of their parent work. Focusing on sequels and adaptations as extended lines and brands, this paper analysed 2,490 films released between 2010 and 2013 in the U.S. to examine what types of films were successful in terms of opening weekend gross and non-opening gross. During opening weekends, while sequels generated higher
