About the Lab
Professor Dong-A Shin's research lab specializes in spinal and neural regeneration therapies, focusing on innovative surgical solutions for spinal disorders and neurological recovery. The lab conducts cutting-edge research in spinal reconstruction using 3D-printed implants, minimally invasive interventions like radiofrequency neurotomy for chronic pain, and regenerative approaches using neural precursor cells after stroke. Their work spans biomechanical modeling of vertebroplasty, cervical disc replacement outcomes, and spinal instrumentation, emphasizing patient-specific solutions and long-term functional improvement. The lab integrates clinical applications with advanced imaging and computational modeling to optimize surgical strategies and tissue repair.

15Pelvic reconstruction after sacral resection is challenging in terms of anatomical complexity, excessive loadbearing, and wide defects. Nevertheless, the technological development of 3D-printed implants enables us to overcome these difficulties. Here, we present a case of sacral osteosarcoma surgically treated with hemisacrectomy and sacral reconstruction using a 3D-printed implant. The implant was printed as a customized titanium prosthesis from a 3D real-sized reconstruction of a patient’s CT
The transplantation of neural precursor cells (NPCs) is known to be a promising approach to ameliorating behavioral deficits after stroke in a rodent model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo). Previous studies have shown that transplanted NPCs migrate toward the infarct region, survive and differentiate into mature neurons to some extent. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of NPC migration following transplantation into stroke animals have yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investi
Chronic neck and arm pain or cervicobrachialgia commonly occurs with the degeneration of cervical spine. Authors investigated the usefulness of radiofrequency (RF) neurotomies of cervical medial branches in patients with cervicobrachialgia and analyzed the factors which can influence the treatment outcome. Demographic data, types of pain distribution, responses of double controlled blocks, electrical stimulation parameters, numbers and levels of neurotomies, and surgical outcomes were evaluated
Objective : The purpose of this study is to find the optimal stiffness and volume of bone cement and their biomechanical effects on the adjacent vertebrae to determine a better strategy for conducting vertebroplasty. Methods : A three-dimensional finite-element model of a functional spinal unit was developed using computed tomography scans of a normal motion segment, comprising the T11, T12 and L1 vertebrae. Volumes of bone cement, with appropriate mechanical properties, were inserted into the t
Purpose: We have experienced 23 patients who had underwent cervical disc replacement with Mobi-C disc prosthesis and analyzed their radiological results to evaluate its efficacy. Patients and Methods: This study was performed on 23 patients with degenerative cervical disc disease who underwent CDR with Mobi-C disc prosthesis from March 2006 to June 2006. Results: The age of the study population ranged from 31 to 62 years with mean of 43 years, and 16 male and 7 female cases. Regarding axial pain
Purpose: We performed 65 cases of posterior fusion surgery for cervical and/or high thoracic lesions using a polyaxial screw-rod system. Patients and Methods: A total of 486 screws were implanted in 65 patients. Results: Fixation of the screws was carried out over an average of 2.9 spinal segments. Upon evaluation by postoperative CT scans, twelve (2.5%) screws had suboptimal trajectories but two of these revealed radiculopathy in one patient and required screw repositioning. No vascular sequela
Purpose: Percutaneous epidural neuroplasty (PEN) is a minimally invasive treatment. The efficacy of PEN has been relatively well investigated; however, the relationshipbetween the clinical effectiveness of PEN and the severity of spinal canal stenosis by disc material has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to compare clinical outcomes of PEN according to the dural sac cross-sectionalarea in single level disc disease. Materials and Methods: This study included 363 patients wi
Purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used to screen and follow-up spinal dural arteriovenous fistulae (SDAVF). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between MRI findings and neurologic function in SDAVF. This study also investigated clinical features and treatment results of SDAVF. Materialsand Methods: A total of 15 consecutive patients who underwent embolizationor surgery for SDAVF were included. We treated seven (60%) patients with embolization and six (40%)
Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate radiological and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) for cervical degenerative disc disease. The results may assist in surgical decision-making and enable more effective and safer implementation of cervical arthroplasty. Materials and Methods: A total of 125 patients who were treated with CDA between 2006 and 2019 were assessed. Radiological measurements and clinical outcomes included the visua
Purpose: This study aimed to present our experiences with a precise surgical strategy for sacrectomy. Materials and Methods: This study comprised a retrospective review of 16 patients (6 males and 10 females) who underwent sacrectomyfrom 2011 to 2019. The average age was 42.4 years old, and the mean follow-up period was 40.8 months. Clinical data, including age, sex, history, pathology, radiographs, surgical approaches, onset of recurrence, and prognosis, were analyzed. Results: The main preopera
A 40-year-old Asian female presented with a 2-month history of right shoulder pain and right triceps weakness. MRI revealed an extramedullary, extradural, dumbbell-shaped spinal cord tumor with C6 to C7 iso- and hyperintensity on T1 and T2 weighted imaging, respectively. Histological examination revealed monomorphous spindle cells with a storiform pattern. Immunohistochemistry was positive for CD34, CD99, and negative for EMA, SMA, and S100; solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) was confirmed.
Objective : Vertebral distraction is routinely performed during anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). Overdistraction can injure the facet joints and may cause postoperative neck pain consequently. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical relevance of distraction force during ACDF. Methods : This study included 24 consecutive patients with single level cervical disc disease undergoing single level ACDF. We measure the maximum torque just before the the arm of the Caspa
Neuromuscular disorders (NMDs) are diseases involving the upper and lower motor neurons and muscles. In patients with NMDs, cervical spinal deformities are a very common issue; however, unlike thoracolumbar spinal deformities, few studies have investigated these disorders. The patients with NMDs have irregular spinal curvature caused by poor balance and poor coordination of their head, neck, and trunk. Particularly, cervical deformity occurs at younger age, and is known to show more rigid and se
Objective : To investigate the biomechanical effects of a newly proposed Interspinous Process Compressor (IPC) and compare with pedicle screw fixation at surgical and adjacent levels of lumbar spine. Methods : A three dimensional finite element model of intact lumbar spine was constructed and two spinal fusion models using pedicle screw fixation system and a new type of interspinous devices, IPC, were developed. The biomechanical effects such as range of motion (ROM) and facet contact force were
Objective : To compare the fusion rate of a hydroxyapatite demineralized bone matrix (DBM) with post-laminectomy acquired autograft in lumbar interbody fusion surgery and to evaluate the correlation between fusion rate and clinical outcome. Methods : From January 2013 to April 2014, 98 patients underwent lumbar interbody fusion surgery with hydroxyapatite DBM (HA-DBM group) in our institute. Of those patients, 65 received complete CT scans for 12 months postoperatively in order to evaluate fusio
