About the Lab
Professor Dong-Ho Lee's research lab specializes in natural product chemistry and metabolomics, focusing on the isolation and structural elucidation of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants, particularly those with therapeutic potential in cancer and inflammatory diseases. The lab employs advanced analytical techniques such as UPLC-QTOF-MS and NMR for metabolite profiling and biomarker discovery, with a strong emphasis on age-dependent metabolite variation in ginseng and other plant species. Additionally, the lab explores the development of sustainable and reusable catalysts, such as NHC-Pd systems on macroporous resins, for efficient organic synthesis. Their work bridges natural product discovery with analytical innovation and environmental sustainability.

15Bioassay-guided fractionation of an ethyl acetate-soluble extract from the whole plants of Broussonetia papyrifera, using an in vitro aromatase inhibition assay, led to the isolation of five new active compounds, 5,7,2',4'-tetrahydroxy-3-geranylflavone (1), isogemichalcone C (8), 3'-[gamma-hydroxymethyl-(E)-gamma-methylallyl]-2,4,2',4'-tetrahydroxychalcone 11'-O-coumarate (9), demethylmoracin I (10), and (2S)-2',4'-dihydroxy-2' '-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)dihydrofuro[2,3-h]flavanone (11), and 10
Macroporous polystyrene (MPS)-supported 1-mesitylimidazolium chloride resin was prepared by reacting macroporous chloromethyl polystyrene with 1-mesitylimidazole as a supported N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursor for the immobilization of a palladium catalyst. This MPS-supported NHC precursor readily formed a stable complex with Pd(OAc)2, which effectively catalyzed the Suzuki reaction of aryl iodide and bromides at room temperature and even aryl chlorides at elevated temperatures (100 degree
An ultraperformance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Tof MS)-based metabolomic technique was applied for metabolite profiling of 60 Panax ginseng samples aged from 1 to 6 years. Multivariate statistical methods such as principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis were used to compare the derived patterns among the samples. The data set was subsequently applied to various metabolite selection methods for sophisticated classification wi
[structure: see text] Aiphanol (1), a novel stilbenolignan, along with isorhapontigenin (2), piceatannol (3), and luteolin, were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation from the seeds of Aiphanes aculeata Willd. (Arecaceae). The structure of compound 1 was elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Compound 1 is based on an unprecedented stilbenolignan skeleton in which a stilbene moiety is linked with a phenylpropane unit through a dioxane bridge. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibited significant inhibitory
The hydrologic cycle plays an important role in carbon cycling, due to the coupling of vapor release and CO 2 uptake during photosynthesis. This coupling, expressed as Water Use Efficiency (WUE) or Transpiration Ratio, can provide an inexpensive alternative for estimating the Net Primary Productivity (NPP) of terrestrial ecosystems. The D/H and 18 O/ 16 O trends of river water in the Mississippi basin are mostly indistinguishable from those of precipitation. This, combined with isotopic mass bal
The age of the ginseng plant has been considered as an important criterion to determine the quality of this species. For age differentiation and structure interpretation of age-dependent key constituents of Panax ginseng, hairy root (fine root) extracts aged from four to six years were analyzed using a nontargeted approach with ultraperformance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOFMS). Various classification methods were used to determine an optimal method
Seventeen new prenylated xanthones (1-17) were isolated from an ethyl acetate-soluble extract of root bark of Cudrania tricuspidata together with 17 previously identified xanthones. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Six new compounds (3, 7, 8, 9, 15, and 16) and six known compounds (18-23) showed neuroprotective effects against 6-hydroxydopamine-induced cell death in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, with EC50 values of 0.7-16.6 μM.
Seventy-five compounds, including 21 new compounds (1-21), were isolated from the root bark of Cudrania tricuspidata. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by interpretation of their spectroscopic data. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their neuroprotective effects against 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced cell death, and nine compounds had activities with EC50 values of 1.9-30.2 μM. The 75 isolated compounds along with 34 previously reported xanthones were tested al
Six new spiroindole alkaloids (1-6) and two new spiroditerpenoids (7 and 8) were isolated from an EtOAc extract of Aspergillus duricaulis culture media together with five known compounds. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by analysis of NMR and MS data, and the absolute configurations of compounds 1-8 were confirmed by CD spectroscopic methods. All isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibition of beta-amyloid (Aβ) aggregate-induced toxicity in PC12 cells and Aβ ag
A bioassay-guided isolation using a green fluorescence protein (GFP)-tagged pepper mottle virus (PepMoV-GFP) based leaf-disk method to obtain new antiviral agents led to the isolation of trichodermin, 1, and a new compound trichoderminol, 2, from EtOAc extract of Trichoderma albolutescens culture medium. The structures of compounds 1 and 2 were determined by MS and NMR experiments, and the absolute configurations of the compounds were established by experimental and calculated vibrational circul
