About the Lab
Professor Dong-Hun Han's research lab focuses on the epidemiological and clinical investigation of oral health disparities, with a strong emphasis on the interplay between systemic diseases—such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer—and periodontal disease. The lab explores modifiable behavioral and occupational risk factors, including smoking, shift work, and dental material exposure (e.g., BPA-containing restorations), to assess their impact on oral health outcomes. A key direction involves evaluating the effectiveness of comprehensive oral care programs in vulnerable populations, particularly cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. The lab also investigates the broader implications of oral health on general well-being, especially in aging populations.

15BACKGROUND: Smoking and diabetes are well-known risk factors for periodontitis. The aims of this study are to examine whether these factors are associated with periodontitis in representative samples of Koreans and to estimate the interaction impact of smoking and diabetes on periodontitis in this population. METHODS: The Korean National Oral Health Survey (KNOHS) 2006 collected nationally representative samples of oral epidemiologic data. A community periodontal index (CPI) of 3 to 4 and a CPI
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the comprehensive oral care program on oral health status and symptoms in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotherapy. METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group in non-synchronized design. All participants including control and experimental group were asked for the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire H&N35 (EORTC QLQ-H&
Findings of this cross-sectional study suggest that shift work may be associated with periodontitis. Shift workers aged ≥45 years and irregular shift workers aged ≥45 years were risk groups for periodontitis.
Objective: The extent to which periodontitis is attributable to smoking in Korea has been examined rarely. The aims of this study are to investigate the association between smoking and periodontitis and to estimate the public health impact of smoking on periodontitis in Korea. Methods: The Korean National Oral Health Survey 2006 collected nationally representative oral epidemiologic data for the Korean population. Examiners measured periodontal health status using the community periodontal index
Dental sealants and composite filling materials containing bisphenol-A (BPA) derivatives are increasingly used in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between salivary BPA and the number of tooth surfaces filled with dental sealant, and to determine a cutoff BPA level. Salivary BPA concentration and the number of tooth surfaces filled with dental sealant/resin were determined in 124 age and gender matched children: 62 controls had no dental sealant/resin on their tooth
To assess the association between oral health and general health, this study examined the relationship between chewing difficulty and twelve chronic health conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, cerebro- and cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disease, respiratory disease, eye/nose/throat disease, stomach/intestinal ulcer, renal dysfunction, thyroid disease, depression, and cancer in Korea. The study population was 3,066 elders aged 65 years old and more from the fourth K
AIM: The aims of this study were to examine inequalities in periodontitis and tooth loss among South Korean adults using the Wright's Neo-Marxian social class (NMSC) indicator and to assess the impact of material, psychosocial, health behavioural and workplace environmental factors in the association of social class with oral health. METHODS: This study used the data from the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with 6710 participants aged 19-54 years old. Participants were
AIMS: To investigate in a representative sample of South Koreans (1) the prevalence of and associations between general pain, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and suicide ideation (SI), and (2) whether the associations between general pain, TMD, and SI differ according to cancer history. METHODS: Data were from the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES IV; N = 16,658). KNHANES IV participants provided reports regarding their cancer history, EQ-5D (a measure of
Objectives: The objectives of this study was to evaluate the effect of geriatric oral health programs on oral health-related quality of life among elders. Methods : This study was performed by longitudinal intervention design. The original 49 items translated using a forward-backward method were used in both parts. The subjects were in two groups, namely, denture group(n=21) who received complete or removable partial denture, and promotion group(n=107) who received care services for oral health
Purpose: The institutionalized elderly have placed the most vulnerable state, and the report about the oral health status of the institutionalized elderly was scarce. The aims of the current study were to investigate the oral health status of institutionalized elderly. Materials and methods: The survey of the oral health status was carried out on 487 institutionalized elderly from 4 longterm care facilities of Seoul metropolitan city, Gyunggi province, and Gangwon province in Korea. Results: The
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Evidence shows that a short stature in adulthood is associated with chronic diseases. However, few studies have investigated the association between height and periodontitis. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between adult height and periodontitis and to assess the roles of covariates in different birth cohorts of Korea. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study using the data from the 4th and 5th Korea National Health and Nutritiona
Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a pleomorphic soft tissue sarcoma. Three cases of MFH were reported in our study. The first case involved in the right infratemporal fossa of a 32-year-old female was presented. MR imaging revealed a 5.0 × 3.3 cm soft tissue mass of inhomogeneous high signal intensity. The second case was found in the right hard palate of a 66-year-old male. CT demonstrated bone destruction and MR imaging showed a 4 × 4 cm sized soft tissue mass of heterogeneous high signa
South Korea's oral health care non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played a crucial role in South-North relations, although a formal intergovernmental relationship is difficult to establish and also easily breaks down. Humanitarian assistance by NGOs in the oral health care sector is an area that receives wide support from South Korean society for its urgency and for its appeal to humanity. This humanitarian assistance started in the late 1990's and continued to grow until the late 2000's
Objectives: The distribution of salivary flow rate and its buffering capacity is no well defined and limited to evidence of two small works in Korea. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate stimulated salivary flow rate and its buffering capacity according to age groups among some workers in factories using acids. Methods: We surveyed 95 workers in 6 factories who provided a written informed consent form. They were categorized into three age groups: 19-27 years, 28-34 years, and 35-64 years. A stim
BACKGROUND: The number of North Korean defectors (NKDs) escaping to South Korea has increased. The health status of NKDs is an essential factor for a successful settlement into South Korean society. However, no studies have been conducted on the health status of NKDs in terms of education and social support. The aim of this study was to determine the associations of education and social support with the self-rated health status among NKDs. METHODS: This study utilized data gained from face-to-fa
