About the Lab
Professor Dong Il Jung's research lab specializes in organizational behavior, leadership, and knowledge integration within complex institutional and cultural contexts. The lab investigates leadership dynamics—particularly charismatic and transformational leadership—across diverse organizational settings, with a strong focus on cultural specificity, especially in East Asian contexts such as China and South Korea. It also explores the structural and network dimensions of interdisciplinary learning and career development, particularly through the lens of double majoring and cross-functional team formation. Additionally, the lab examines the interplay between different organizational control systems, such as TQM and BPR, and their impact on workplace practices and employee engagement.

15While much is known about what charismatic leaders do, where they emerge, and what their followers' reactions are, relatively little systematic empirical research has been conducted to assess who charismatic leaders are, and how we differentiate charismatic from noncharismatic leaders. To address this gap in the literature, multi-source field data were collected in five technology-driven organizations to examine the relationship between five personal attributes of leaders (i.e., self-monitoring,
BACKGROUND: Apoptosis, which is involved in the process of mesangial cell and podocyte loss in diabetic nephropathy, is known to be regulated by protein kinase B/Akt (Akt). A number of studies have therefore investigated the activity of Akt under diabetic conditions, but the results have not been consistent. In this study, we hypothesized that apoptosis may occur differentially and that Akt may be differentially activated according to glomerular size in diabetic kidney disease. METHODS: Fifty ma
This paper traces the diffusion of cross-functional process improvement teams in a multinational bank's Six Sigma program. Rates of team formation were high where clerical workers received low wages relative to managers and professionals, experienced weak wage growth, were less likely to rise into supervisory positions, and formed a shrinking proportion of bank employment; and where managerial and professional wage gains and employment growth were strong. These conditions did not provide a stabl
The unique cultural and historical background of Chinese firms makes it likely that Western‐based findings on the nature and effects of chief operating officer (CEO) leadership may not generalize to them. Recently, Tsui et al. (2004) have identified four distinct leadership styles among Chinese CEOs based on a set of leadership behaviors that reflect the Chinese cultural framework. They further inferred from an analysis of 25 successful firms that all four leadership styles can be effective in t
Organizational control is a central component of modern management discourses. Techno-structural control emphasizes technocratic rationalization of work processes and maximum utilization of worker's self-interest, while normative control focuses on worker's commitment and loyalties as well as the right kind of employment practices. By using TQM as a normative control discourse and the BPR as a techno-structural discourse, this paper examines how the two rival camps influenced each other's percep
As part of the larger research project that investigates the evolution of regional festivals in Korea, the paper examines the diffusion and institutionalization of commercialized form of regional festivals from 1991 to 2009. When such form of festivals emerged in the early 1990s, it was seen as a doubtful and illegitimate practice due to its weak institutional status relative to the conventional model of festivals. However, the commercialized form of festivals took off in the mid 1990s, rapidly
