About the Lab
Professor Dong Seok Lee's research lab focuses on clinical and translational studies in internal medicine, with a strong emphasis on metabolic disorders, gastrointestinal diseases, and oncology. The lab investigates the complex interplay between body composition parameters—such as obesity, visceral adiposity, and sarcopenia—and metabolic syndrome, as well as the pathogenesis and management of rare and severe complications in cancer and inflammatory conditions. Research also extends to biomarker discovery (e.g., CCL28 in ulcerative colitis) and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for rare gastrointestinal malignancies and complications like disseminated intravascular coagulation in gastric cancer. There are many reports about causes of corrosive agents such as acids and alkaline and occasionally hot food in either liquid or solid forms as causes of upper gastrointestinal mucosal injury. However, there have been no reports on bowel preparation solutions as a cause of upper gastrointestinal injury. Droplets released from the mouth of a COVID-19 infected patient are an important source of infection [1]. Currently, gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy preventative guidelines have been developed based on cough models with droplet travel distances of over 2 m [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]. However, the droplet-related studies reported so far have mostly focused on cough models related to respiratory disease. Thus far, no studies have been conducted on droplets generated during GI endoscopic examinations.
