About the Lab
Professor Dong-Woon Noh's research lab specializes in environmental economics and climate policy analysis, with a primary focus on measuring and evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) emission abatement costs, energy efficiency, and the effectiveness of market-based environmental instruments. The lab conducts empirical studies using firm-level and industry-level data to assess the performance of emissions reduction policies, including emissions trading schemes, Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects, and post-Paris Agreement cooperative mechanisms such as Article 6.2 and 6.4. Key research directions include the estimation of marginal abatement costs, greenhouse gas emission efficiency (GEE), and productivity growth under environmental constraints using advanced econometric and productivity analysis techniques such as stochastic frontier analysis and the Malmquist-Luenberger index.

12This study measures and decomposes green productivity growth of Korean manufacturing industries between 2004 and 2010 using the Malmquist-Luenberger productivity index. We focus on differences in the measures of productivity growth by distinguishing carbon emissions from either end-user industries or the electricity generation industry. Empirical results suggest three main findings. First, the efficiency of total emissions is higher than that of direct emissions except for the shipbuilding indus
The goal of this study is to introduce greenhouse gas (GHG) Emission Efficiency (GEE) as the index to evaluate the effectiveness of GHG mitigation policies. To define and estimate GEE, we rely on the concept of multiple output distance function and employ stochastic frontier analysis, respectively. The data set used in this study comprises firm‐level panel data from 251 firms operating in 15 industries under the regulation of the Energy Target Management System, and the critical variables for es
The Korean government and private sectors participating in the Emission Trading Scheme are expected to utilize a cooperative approach alongside sustainable development mechanisms of the Paris Agreement to achieve the 2030 greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions target. It is necessary to estimate the GHG emission abatement costs of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects to forecast the abatement costs of the two approaches found in the Paris Agreement; this is because these three approaches are
Estimation of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission abatement cost of clean development mechanism (CDM) projects is essential for forecasting the abatement cost of the cooperative approach (Article 6.2) and the sustainable mechanism (Article 6.4) of the Paris Agreement. The purpose of this paper is to compare the GHG emission abatement cost of CDM projects among four countries using the abatement cost information each country. The average abatement cost was $9.65/tCO₂ (2020 price) for all types of C
The GHG emission abatement costs of clean development mechanism (CDM) projects are needed to forecast the abatement cost of the cooperative approaches and the sustainable mechanism of the Paris Agreement. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the GHG emission abatement cost of CDM projects in Chile using three kinds of investment analysis: simple cost analysis, investment comparison, and benchmark analysis. The average abatement cost of 53 CDM projects is $13.87/tCO₂ (2020 price). The cost of
