About the Lab
Professor Donghoon Kim's research lab specializes in interdisciplinary biomedical and engineering research, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of metabolic regulation and inflammation, particularly involving cytokines like GM-CSF in obesity and insulin resistance. The lab also investigates epigenetic regulators such as histone deacetylases (HDACs) and their inhibition by natural compounds, with potential applications in cancer therapy. In parallel, the lab develops advanced image analysis and machine learning techniques for biomedical and civil infrastructure applications, including crack detection in aging structures and facial feature recognition. These diverse research directions reflect a strong integration of molecular biology, computational modeling, and real-world sensing technologies.

15The potential usefulness of Hall's concept of high- versus low-context cultures to international marketing has been discussed widely. However, implications of this concept in marketing have largely been discussed descriptively and little attempt has been made to empirically compare various cultures in a real setting. In this article the authors report the findings from a cross-cultural study that attempts to show whether Hall's description of the characteristics of high- and low-context cultures
Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a proinflammatory cytokine that has a central action to reduce food intake and body weight. Consistent with this, GM-CSF knockout mice are more obese and hyperphagic than wild-type mice. However, in lung, GM-CSF is an important determinant of macrophage infiltration. Consequently, we sought to determine if GM-CSF might contribute to adipose tissue macrophage accumulation, insulin resistance, and low-grade inflammation that occurs when
Histone deacetylase (HDAC) has been highlighted as one of key players in tumorigenesis and angio-genesis. Recently, several derivatives of psam-maplin (Psams) from a marine sponge have been known to inhibit the HDAC activity, but the molecular mechanism for the inhibition has not fully un-derstood. Here, we explored the mode of action of Psams for the inhibition of HDAC activity in the molecular and cellular level. Among the derivatives, psammaplin A (Psam A) showed the potent inhibitory activit
Structural cracks are a vital feature in evaluating the health of aging structures. Inspectors regularly monitor structures' health using visual information because early detection of cracks on highly trafficked structures is critical for maintaining the public's safety. In this work, a framework for detecting cracks along with their locations is proposed. Image data provided by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is stitched using image processing techniques to overcome limitations in the resoluti
We present a feature-based method to classify salient points as belonging to objects in the face or background classes. We use SURF local descriptors (speeded up robust features) to generate feature vectors and use SVMs (support vector machines) as classifiers. Our system consists of a two-layer hierarchy of SVMs classifiers. On the first layer, a single classifier checks whether feature vectors are from face images or not. On the second layer, component labeling is operated using each component
OBJECTIVE: Because adipose tissue is highly vascularized, modifying adipose tissue vasculature may provide a novel method for reducing body fat. A peptide sequence that elicits apoptosis of endothelium in white fat potently reduced body weight. We sought to determine how inhibiting adipose tissue vasculature changes key aspects of energy balance regulation and the neuroendocrine system that maintains energy balance. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Lean and obese mice or rats were treated with proap
Unlike past findings on cross-cultural advertising, culture seems to have little effect on visual forms in ads. In study 1, we tested whether the culture-congruent visual forms would still be prevalent, in spite of all the recent cultural convergence between Eastern and Western cultures. Interestingly, content analyses of visuals in 632 advertisements in a wide range of magazines from Korea (high context) and US (low context) revealed that ads with direct visual forms were more prevalent in both
