About the Lab

Professor Dongsu Ryu's research lab specializes in computational astrophysics, focusing on the dynamics of plasma and magnetic fields in cosmic environments. Key research directions include turbulence and magnetic field amplification in the intergalactic and intracluster media, shock physics in galaxy clusters, and the numerical simulation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes in cosmological and astrophysical systems. The lab develops advanced high-order finite difference schemes, such as the Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) method, to accurately model supersonic flows, strong shocks, and dynamo processes in complex astrophysical settings.

Turbulence and Magnetic Fields in the Large-Scale Structure of the Universe
Dongsu Ryu, Hyesung Kang, Jungyeon Cho, Santabrata Das
SJR Q1ScienceOA

The nature and origin of turbulence and magnetic fields in the intergalactic space are important problems that are yet to be understood. We propose a scenario in which turbulent-flow motions are induced via the cascade of the vorticity generated at cosmological shocks during the formation of the large-scale structure. The turbulence in turn amplifies weak seed magnetic fields of any origin. Supercomputer simulations show that the turbulence is subsonic inside clusters and groups of galaxies, whe

A Divergence‐free Upwind Code for Multidimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Flows
Dongsu Ryu, Francesco Miniati, T. W. Jones, Adam Frank
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

A description is given for preserving del . B = 0 in a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code that employs the upwind, total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme and Strang type operator splitting for multidimensionality. The method is based on the staggered mesh technique to constrain the transport of magnetic field: the magnetic field components are defined at grid interfaces with their advective fluxes on grid edges, while other quantities are defined at grid centers. The magnetic field at grid centers

A cosmological hydrodynamic code based on the total variation diminishing scheme
Dongsu Ryu, Jeremiah P. Ostriker, Hyesung Kang, Renyue Cen
SJR Q1The Astrophysical Journal

An explicitly second-order finite difference code based on a total variation diminishing scheme for self-gravitating cosmological hydrodynamic systems is described. The code was developed to follow correctly the adiabatic changes of extremely supersonic preshock flows with a Mach number larger than 100 as well as very strong shocks. In calculations of the formation of a 1D Zel'dovich pancake, an energy accuracy of 1 percent is obtained for 32 cells per unit wavelength, and the accuracy reaches 0

DIFFUSIVE SHOCK ACCELERATION SIMULATIONS OF RADIO RELICS
Hyesung Kang, Dongsu Ryu, T. W. Jones
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

Recent radio observations have identified a class of structures, so-called radio relics, in clusters of galaxies. The radio emission from these sources is interpreted as synchrotron radiation from GeV electrons gyrating in ??G-level magnetic fields. Radio relics, located mostly in the outskirts of clusters, seem to associate with shock waves, especially those developed during mergers. In fact, they seem to be good structures to identify and probe such shocks in intracluster media (ICMs), provide

Convective instability in differentially rotating disks
Dongsu Ryu, Jeremy Goodman
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

A normal mode analysis for nonaxisymmetric perturbations in a thin, differentially rotating disk with a vertical structure that is isothermal and convectively unstable is performed. The vertical gravity is assumed to be external and constant. The perturbation scale is assumed to be much shorter than the radius of the disk but comparable to or less than the thickness. The initial value problem is formulated in shearing coordinates. Dispersion relations are obtained for the three limiting cases of

Numerical Magnetohydrodynamics in Astrophysics: Algorithm and Tests for Multidimensional Flow
Dongsu Ryu, T. W. Jones, Adam Frank
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

We present for astrophysical use a multi-dimensional numerical code to solve the equations for ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is based on an explicit finite difference method on an Eulerian grid, called the Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme, which is a second-order-accurate extension of the Roe-type upwind scheme. Multiple spatial dimensions are treated through a Strang-type operator splitting. The constraint of a divergence-free field is enforced exactly by calculating a correction

The growth of linear perturbations of adiabatic shock waves
Dongsu Ryu, Ethan T. Vishniac
SJR Q1The Astrophysical Journal

The linear theory of the dynamic instability of strong plane-parallel or spherical adiabatic blast shock wave in a medium with initially uniform density is considered. The principal frequency eigenvalues are obtained as a function of transverse wavelength for several values of the adiabatic index. It is found that the plane-parallel and spherical shocks are overstable for the adiabatic index less than about 1.2. The astrophysical implications of these results are discussed. These detailed eigenv

Properties of Merger Shocks in Merging Galaxy Clusters
Ji‐Hoon Ha, Dongsu Ryu, Hyesung Kang
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

Abstract X-ray shocks and radio relics detected in the cluster outskirts are commonly interpreted as shocks induced by mergers of subclumps. We study the properties of merger shocks in merging galaxy clusters, using a set of cosmological simulations for the large-scale structure formation of the universe. As a representative case, we focus on the simulated clusters that undergo almost head-on collisions with mass ratio ∼2. Due to the turbulent nature of the intracluster medium, shock surfaces ar

Hyesung Kang, Dongsu Ryu
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

We reexamine nonlinear diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at cosmological shocks in the large-scale structure of the universe, incorporating wave-particle interactions that are expected to operate in collisionless shocks. Adopting simple phenomenological models for magnetic field amplification (MFA) by cosmic-ray (CR) streaming instabilities and Alfvenic drift, we perform kinetic DSA simulations for a wide range of sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers and evaluate the CR injection fraction and accele

CHARACTERISTIC LENGTHS OF MAGNETIC FIELD IN MAGNETOHYDRODYNAMIC TURBULENCE
Jungyeon Cho, Dongsu Ryu
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

In the framework of turbulence dynamo, flow motions amplify a weak seed magnetic field through the stretching of field lines. Although the amplification process has been a topic of active research, less attention has been paid to the length scales of magnetic field. In this paper, we described a numerical study on characteristic lengths of magnetic field in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. We considered the case of very weak or zero mean magnetic field, which is applicable to the turbulence in th

The Effect of Cosmic‐Ray Diffusion on the Parker Instability
Dongsu Ryu, Jongsoo Kim, Seung Soo Hong, T. W. Jones
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

The Parker instability, which has been considered as a process governing the structure of the interstellar medium, is induced by the buoyancy of magnetic fields and cosmic rays. In previous studies, while the magnetic field has been fully incorporated in the context of isothermal magnetohydrodynamics, cosmic rays have normally been treated with the simplifying assumption of infinite diffusion along magnetic field lines but no diffusion across them. The cosmic-ray diffusion is, however, finite. I

FARADAY ROTATION MEASURE DUE TO THE INTERGALACTIC MAGNETIC FIELD
Takuya Akahori, Dongsu Ryu
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

Studying the nature and origin of the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) is an outstanding problem of cosmology. Measuring Faraday rotation would be a promising method to explore the IGMF in the large-scale structure (LSS) of the universe. We investigated the Faraday rotation measure (RM) due to the IGMF in filaments of galaxies using simulations for cosmological structure formation. We employed a model IGMF based on turbulence dynamo in the LSS of the universe; it has an average strength of $<

RE-ACCELERATION MODEL FOR RADIO RELICS WITH SPECTRAL CURVATURE
Hyesung Kang, Dongsu Ryu
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

ABSTRACT Most of the observed features of radio gischt relics, such as spectral steepening across the relic width and a power-law-like integrated spectrum, can be adequately explained by a diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) model in which relativistic electrons are (re-)accelerated at shock waves induced in the intracluster medium. However, the steep spectral curvature in the integrated spectrum above ∼2 GHz detected in some radio relics, such as the Sausage relic in cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301, m

SHOCK WAVES AND COSMIC RAY ACCELERATION IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF GALAXY CLUSTERS
Sungwook E. Hong, Dongsu Ryu, Hyesung Kang, Renyue Cen
SJR Q1The Astrophysical JournalOA

The outskirts of galaxy clusters are continuously disturbed by mergers and gas infall along filaments, which in turn induce turbulent flow motions and shock waves. We examine the properties of shocks that form within r(200) in sample galaxy clusters from structure formation simulations. While most of these shocks are weak and inefficient accelerators of cosmic rays (CRs), there are a number of strong, energetic shocks which can produce large amounts of CR protons via diffusive shock acceleration
