About the Lab
Professor Dongwook Son's research lab focuses on regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, particularly in orthopedic applications such as meniscal allograft transplantation and ligament reconstruction. The lab also investigates natural compounds for dermatological and metabolic applications, including cinnamic acid's role in melanin regulation and Korean red ginseng's anti-fatigue effects. Additionally, environmental biotechnology is a key area, with studies on biological nitrogen removal using zeolite-based systems in industrial wastewater treatment. The lab integrates clinical outcomes, cellular mechanisms, and environmental sustainability across diverse biomedical and ecological challenges.

15BACKGROUND: Meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) is a widely performed surgical technique used to reconstruct meniscal deficiencies after meniscectomy. However, the long-term effects of extrusion on clinical and radiologic outcomes are unclear. HYPOTHESIS: In long-term follow-up, extrusion after MAT would show poorer outcomes than nonextrusion and would lead to faster progression of arthritic changes. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Forty-five MAT cases (lateral, n
Cinnamic acid is a wildly distributed phenylpropanoid component naturally occurring in plants, and is mainly found in Cinnamomum cassia BLUME and Panax ginseng. Cinnamic acid was recently reported to exert a tyrosinase inhibitory effect. However, research on melanocytes and animal bodies was not reported until now. In this study, we examined the effects of cinnamic acid on melanin biosynthesis within the melanocytes and brown guinea pigs. Melan-a cells were used to examine the effects of cinnami
Biological removal of nitrogen from industrial wastewater was investigated by a novel O/A (oxic/anoxic) type process with natural zeolite circulation. This process consists of ammonium ion removal by zeolites and subsequent biological regeneration of zeolites. Two types of raw wastewater with high strength ammonia nitrogen (300–400 mg/L) from a fertilizer industry and a tannery industry, separately, were prepared for laboratory scale experiments. After ammonia ion removal from the influent waste
Background: The aging process is accompanied by several conditions that could affect the outcome of meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT). These conditions have made it difficult for clinicians to determine the effect of chronologic age on survivorship after MAT. Hypothesis: Advanced age does not have an adverse effect on survivorship of MAT when controlling for age-related factors, such as cartilage status and time from previous meniscectomy. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
Our study revealed that KRG has a potent antifatigue effect without significant adverse effects in people with deficiency syndrome. Although a larger sample size and longer treatment may be required for a more definite conclusion, this clinical trial is the first to disprove the common conception of "fireness" related to KRG.
BACKGROUND: The aim was to compare tunnel widening of autogenous hamstring anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) using cortical button versus cross-pin femoral fixation. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched from inception to 11 April 2019. The study included all levels of evidence in studies that reported femoral tunnel widening and compared cortical button and cross-pin femoral fixation for ACLR. RESULTS: Six studies
Resveratrol (trans-3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene) is a natural phytoalexin found in grape skin, and has been suggested to be an antioxidant agent, an anticancer agent and a cardioprotective agent. In particular, recent experimental evidence has demonstrated that resveratrol exhibits neuroprotective effects in various assay systems. During the study on the resveratrol derivatives, we found that (4-methoxybenzylidene)-(3-methoxyphenyl)amine (MBMPA), which has blocked free phenolic groups, strongly pro
PURPOSE: To present clinical results according to tunnel overlap in 1-stage anatomical revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: All patients who underwent revision ACLR performed by a single surgeon (J.H.A.) from 2012 to 2017 and were followed up for >24 months were retrospectively evaluated. The exclusion criteria were concomitant ligament injury, including medial collateral ligament injury, modified Outerbridge grade ≥3 cartilage lesion, and severe meniscus defects.
The performances of electroflotation (EF) on the thickening of activated sludge were investigated using laboratory scale batch flotation reactors. Four activated sludges including bulking sludges were tested. After 30 minutes of EF operation, 57-84% of sludge volume reduction could be achieved by EF, while only about 1.5-14% could be obtained by gravity thickening for the same period. After thickening the effluent water quality in terms of TCOD, SS, and turbidity was improved by EF operation for
BACKGROUND: To investigate whether chloroquine enhances the effect of antibiotics against Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative organism of scrub typhus, we compared the effect of antibiotics in combination with chloroquine with the effect of antibiotics alone in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Boryong or AFSC-4 strain was inoculated into ECV304 cells, and incubated in medium containing doxycycline (4 µg/mL), rifampin (4 µg/mL), azithromycin (0.5 µg/mL), chloroquine (1 µg/mL), and each of thes
PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence and degree of shrinkage of transplanted fresh-frozen meniscal allografts in a long-term period of >8 years and to investigate whether the shrinkage of allograft progresses and is associated with inferior clinical and radiologic outcomes after meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) in the long term. METHODS: Twenty-two knees were reviewed in 20 patients (mean age, 31.41 ± 9.11 years) who underwent isolated lateral MAT. All patients were followed with magnetic
