About the Lab
Professor Eu Suk Kim's research lab focuses on infectious diseases, particularly viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and MERS-CoV, with an emphasis on clinical progression, viral shedding, radiological findings, and host immune responses including cytokine profiles. The lab also investigates antimicrobial resistance, especially quinolone resistance in bacterial pathogens, and explores clinical practices to improve patient outcomes, such as surgical site infection prevention and optimal management of bacteremia. Their work combines clinical epidemiology with laboratory-based immunological and microbiological analyses to inform public health strategies and clinical decision-making.

15The prodromal symptoms of COVID-19 were mild and most patients did not have limitations of daily activity. Viral shedding from URT was high from the prodromal phase. Radiological pneumonia was common from the early days of illness, but it was frequently not evident in simple CXR. These findings could be plausible explanations for the easy and rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the community.
Clinical progression over time and cytokine profiles have not been well defined in patients with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection. We included 17 patients with laboratory-confirmed MERS-CoV during the 2015 outbreak in Korea. Clinical and laboratory parameters were collected prospectively. Serum cytokine and chemokine levels in serial serum samples were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All patients presented with fever. The median time to deferves

The quinolone class of antimicrobial agents is one of most widely used classes of antimicrobial agents in outpatient and inpatient treatment. However, quinolone resistance in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria has emerged and increased globally. This resistance limits the usefulness of quinolones in clinical practice. The review summarizes mechanisms of quinolone resistance and its epidemiology and implications in the most common clinical settings, urinary tract infections, respiratory tra
Hospital evaluation using clinical performance indicators can considerably improve the use of SAP. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether this hospital evaluation will decrease the development of SSIs.
BACKGROUND: The need for mandatory confirmation of negative conversion in Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteremia (KpB) has not been adequately addressed. We conducted a retrospective case-control study of adult patients with KpB over a 5-year period in two tertiary-care hospitals to determine the risk factors for persistent bacteremia and to reevaluate the necessity of follow-up blood culture in KpB. METHODS: Persistent KpB is defined as the finding of K. pneumoniae in more than two separate blood-cul
We used several molecular typing methods to analyze 196 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 139 methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) isolates collected between 1996 and 2005. The sequence type 72 MRSA has increased in frequency in the community in the Republic of Korea and in hospitals in recent years.
BACKGROUND: Although non-teaching community hospitals form the majority of healthcare providers in South Korea, there is limited data on antibiotic usage in them. To evaluate the pattern of antibiotic usage and its appropriateness in hospitals with < 400 beds in South Korea. METHODS: A multicentre retrospective study was conducted in 10 hospitals (six long-term care hospitals, three acute care hospitals, and one orthopaedic hospital), with < 400 beds in South Korea. We analysed patterns of antib
OBJECTIVES: We calculated the human resources required for an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) in Korean hospitals. DESIGN: Multicenter retrospective study. SETTING: Eight Korean hospitals ranging in size from 295 to 1,337 beds. METHODS: The time required for performing ASP activities for all hospitalized patients under antibiotic therapy was estimated and converted into hours per week. The actual time spent on patient reviews of each ASP activity was measured with a small number of cases
Successful empirical therapy of Staphylococcus aureus infections requires the ability to predict methicillin resistance. Our aim was to identify predictors of methicillin resistance in community-onset (CO) invasive S. aureus infections. Sixteen hospitals across Korea participated in this study from May to December 2012. We prospectively included cases of S. aureus infection in which S. aureus was isolated from sterile clinical specimens ≤ 72 hours after hospitalization. Clinical and epidemiologi
BACKGROUND: Colistin is increasingly used as the last therapeutic option for the treatment of multidrug-resistant, Gram-negative bacterial infections. To ensure safe and efficacious use of colistin, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is needed due to its narrow therapeutic window. This study aimed to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics of colistin and to guide TDM in colistin-treated patients in Korea. METHODS: In a prospective study, we analyzed PK characteristics in 15 patients wh
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI) after gastric surgery in patients in Korea. DESIGN: A nationwide prospective multicenter study. SETTING: Twenty university-affiliated hospitals in Korea. METHODS: The Korean Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System (KONIS), a Web-based system, was developed. Patients in 20 Korean hospitals from 2007 to 2009 were prospectively monitored for SSI for up to 30 days after gastric surgery. Demographic data, hospital characteris
ABSTRACT Acquired somatic mutations in hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (clonal hematopoiesis or CH) are associated with advanced age, increased risk of cardiovascular and malignant diseases, and decreased overall survival. 1–4 These adverse sequelae may be mediated by altered inflammatory profiles observed in patients with CH. 2,5,6 A pro-inflammatory immunologic profile is also associated with worse outcomes of certain infections, including SARS-CoV-2 and its associated disease Covid-19
The level of ASP establishment was more limited in primary care hospitals than in secondary and tertiary care hospitals in Korea. To improve ASPs in Korean hospitals, a supporting workforce and the establishment of a healthcare fee for ASPs appear to be necessary.
