About the Lab
Professor Eun-hye Lee's research lab specializes in pediatric neurology and epilepsy, focusing on the neurological and genetic underpinnings of childhood-onset seizures and movement disorders. The lab investigates the role of metabolic factors—such as iron deficiency—in febrile seizures, explores the co-occurrence of epileptiform discharges in children with ADHD, and examines clinical outcomes in pediatric conditions like Bell palsy. Additionally, the lab contributes to the understanding of early-onset epileptic encephalopathies through genetic diagnostics, aiming to improve prognosis and treatment strategies.

15BACKGROUND: Febrile seizures are the most common type of seizure in the first 5 years of life, and many factors that increase seizure risk have been identified. This study was performed to examine the association between iron status and febrile seizures in children in South Korea. METHODS: A prospective unmatched case control study was performed in 63 cases of febrile seizures and 65 controls with febrile illness but no seizures. RESULTS: Serum iron, plasma ferritin, and transferrin saturation w
The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and clinical significance of epileptiform discharges in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The authors retrospectively reviewed 180 children who were diagnosed with ADHD and had an electroencephalography (EEG) recording. Epileptiform discharges were found in 29 (16.1%) of 180 patients with ADHD. Of these, 15 (8.3%) had generalized epileptiform discharges and 14 (7.7%) had focal epileptiform discharges. The focal
This study investigates the suitability of outdoor wear among female trekkers in their twenties or thirties and provides data for developing outdoor wear more suitable for young females. Recently climbing has gained popularity as a leisure activity to enjoy the beauty of nature that increases physical and mental stamina. A survey was conducted on 304 female consumers in their twenties and thirties who enjoyed climbing in order to investigate the suitability of outdoor wear among young female con
The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical characteristics and factors affecting the prognosis of children with Bell palsy. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 53 pediatric patients diagnosed with Bell palsy. After a mean follow-up period of 30 days, 30 patients (56%) were completely recovered, 21 patients (40%) were partially recovered, and 2 patients (4%) had not recovered. The patients in the complete recovery group were significantly younger than those in the parti
Clobazam add-on therapy was effective and very tolerable in patients with LGS.
Recent advances in genetics have determined that a number of epilepsy syndromes that occur in the first year of life are associated with genetic etiologies. These syndromes range from benign familial epilepsy syndromes to early-onset epileptic encephalopathies that lead to poor prognoses and severe psychomotor retardation. An early genetic diagnosis can save time and overall cost by reducing the amount of time and resources expended to reach a diagnosis. Furthermore, a genetic diagnosis can prov
Vasovagal syncope and epileptic seizures should be considered as possible causes of most cases of TLOC in children and adolescents. An accurate case history and appropriate evaluation are essential for correct diagnoses.
Background: When a body is discovered at a crime or murder scene, it is crucial to examine the body and estimate its postmortem interval (PMI). Accurate estimation of PMI is vital for identifying suspects and providing clues to resolve the case. MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) are small non-coding RNAs that remain relatively stable in the cell nucleus even after death-related changes occur. Objective: This study developed a molecular beacon probe for mmu-miR-133a-5p and assessed its use in mouse musc
OBJECTIVE: Recently, a mitochondrial encephalopathy due to biallelic HPDL variants was described, associated with a broad range of clinical manifestations ranging from severe, infantile-onset neurodegeneration to adolescence-onset hereditary spastic paraplegia. HPDL converts 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate acid (4-HPPA) into 4-hydroxymandelate (4-HMA), necessary for the synthesis of the mitochondrial electron transporter CoQ10. This suggests a possible bypass of the metabolic block by 4-HMA treatment; h
Background Myotubular myopathy (MTM) is a congenital myopathy characterized by centrally placed nuclei in muscle fibers. Mutations in the myotubularin 1 gene (MTM1) have been identified in the most of the patients with the X-linked recessive form. Case Report This report describes two male infants with X-linked MTM (XLMTM). Both patients presented with generalized hypotonia and respiratory difficulties since birth. We did not perform a muscle biopsy in either patient, but their conditions were d
