About the Lab
Professor Eun-Kei Min's research lab focuses on advancing clinical oncology and surgical outcomes through integrated approaches combining molecular pathology, medical imaging, and precision medicine. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers and genomic subtypes in gastric and breast cancers to improve individualized treatment strategies, while also exploring the metabolic-immune interactions in the tumor microenvironment using PET-CT imaging. Additionally, the lab examines radiation safety in image-guided surgery and the impact of multidrug-resistant infections in transplant patients, emphasizing patient outcomes and clinical decision-making.

15For accurately predicting prognosis and for effectively describing cancer states at a certain point during treatment to other care providers and patients, various staging systems have been utilized in gastric cancer. Among these, the UICC/AJCC tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system is most widely used. However, even within the same substage, gastric cancers can vary substantially in regards to prognosis after treatment. For more accurate and individualized prognostication, staging systems ha
The O-arm system has recently been introduced and has the capability of combined two-dimensional (2-D) fluoroscopy imaging and three-dimensional computed tomography imaging. In this study, an orthopaedic surgical procedure using C-arm and O-arm systems in their 2-D fluoroscopy modes was simulated and the radiation doses to susceptible organs to which operators can be exposed were investigated. The experiments were performed in four configurations of the location of the X-ray source and detector.
This study was performed to measure the equivalent scattered radiation dose delivered to susceptible organs while simulating orthopaedic surgery using conventional and mini C-arm fluoroscopy. In addition, shielding effects on the thyroid, thymus, and gonad, and the direct exposure delivered to the patient's hands were also compared. A conventional and mini C-arms were installed in an operating room, and a hand and an operator phantom were used to simulate a patient's hand and a surgeon. Photolum
BACKGROUND: Transduodenal ampullectomy (TDA) is performed for adenoma or early cancer of the ampulla of Vater (AoV). This study aimed to analyze the short- and long-term outcomes of TDA (TDA group) when compared with conventional pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) or pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD group). METHODS: Patients who underwent TDA between January 2006 and December 2019, and PD cases performed for AoV malignancy with carcinoma in-situ (Tis) (high-grade dysplasia, HGD) and T1 a
Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia (CRAB-B) is a fatal infectious complication of liver transplantation (LT). This study investigated the incidence, effects, and risk factors associated with CRAB-B during the early post-LT period. Among 1051 eligible LT recipients, 29 patients experienced CRAB-B within 30 days of LT with a cumulative incidence of 2.7%. In the patients with CRAB-B (n = 29) and matched controls (n = 145) by nested-case control design, the cumulative incidence
Abstract Evidence suggests that tumor cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) compete for glucose in the tumor microenvironment and that tumor metabolic parameters correlate with localized immune markers in several solid tumors. We investigated the relationship of the standardized uptake value (SUV) of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography computed tomography ( 18 F-FDG-PET-CT) with stromal TIL levels in breast cancer. We included 202 patients who underwent preoperative 18
AIM: To investigate the association between postoperative pain control and oncologic outcomes in resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). METHODS: From January 2009 to December 2014, 221 patients were diagnosed with PDAC and underwent resection with curative intent. Retrospective review of the patients was performed based on electronic medical records system. One patient without records of numerical rating scale (NRS) pain intensity scores was excluded and eight patients who underwent t
OBJECTIVES: The risk factors for late-onset Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) after liver transplantation (LT) have not been well studied. We aimed to analyze the clinical features preceding PCP in LT recipients that would guide individualized prophylaxis. METHODS: Among 742 patients who underwent LT and routine PCP prophylaxis from January 2009 through December 2019 at Severance Hospital, 27 patients developed PCP. We conducted a retrospective case-control study matching each patient with
Although the standard treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm has shifted from open surgery to endovascular repair, open surgery has remained the standard of care for complex aneurysms involving the visceral arteries and in patients unsuitable for endovascular aneurysm repair. Postoperative renal insufficiency may occur after open surgical repair of suprarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. Methods of minimizing renal ischemic injury include aortic cross-clamping and renal reconstruction techniques.
Malakoplakia is a rare, granulomatous disease that usually affects immunocompromised individuals and is generally associated with poor graft and patient survival. We present a case of renal malakoplakia after kidney transplantation (KT). A 33-year-old female patient with chronic kidney disease underwent living-donor KT at Severance Hospital. The patient was administered 375 mg/m 2 rituximab due to high panel reactive antibodies. Immunosuppression was initiated with 1.5 mg/kg anti-thymocyte globu
Cytomegalovirus (CMV), a common pathogen, causes infectious complications and affects long-term survival after transplantation. Studies examining living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) are limited. This study analyzed the risk factors for CMV infection and its impact on the survival of LDLT patients. A nested case–control design retrospectively analyzed data from 952 patients who underwent LDLT from 2005–2021. The incidence of CMV infection for the study cohort was 15.2% at 3 months for LDLT
Seizures are a frequent neurological consequence following liver transplantation (LT), however, research on their clinical impact and risk factors is lacking. Using a nested case-control design, patients diagnosed with seizures (seizure group) within 1-year post-transplantation were matched to controls who had not experienced seizures until the corresponding time points at a 1:5 ratio to perform survival and risk factor analyses. Seizures developed in 61 of 1,243 patients (4.9%) at median of 11
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Accurate assessment of advanced fibrosis and steatosis is essential for prognostication in chronic liver disease. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of MRI in assessing liver fibrosis and steatosis in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: Patients who underwent LT between January 2019 and December 2023 with pretransplant MR elastography (MRE) and MRI-based proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) examinations were included. Explanted liv
Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal tumors mainly originating in the pleura. Since complete resection is the most important prognostic factor, typical surgical approach has been open laparotomy. In this report, we present a unusual case of large retropancreatic SFT that was successfully treated via laparoscopic resection. A 22-year-old female was diagnosed with a 8횞7 cm-sized well-demarcated mass with multiple loculating and enhancing solid portions on the left adrenal fossa. The
TMA after kidney transplantation can be caused by sustained activation of the complement pathway, and early eculizumab treatment appears important in the successful treatment of aHUS refractory to PE.
