About the Lab

Professor Eun-Kyung Park's research lab specializes in pharmacological and translational studies focusing on natural product metabolism, particularly ginsenosides and phytochemicals derived from traditional medicinal plants. The lab investigates the bioactive metabolites formed by human intestinal microbiota and their therapeutic potential in inflammatory, allergic, and neurodegenerative diseases. A key research direction involves the development of personalized medical approaches using 3D-printed implants for craniofacial reconstruction, integrating medical imaging and computational modeling. The lab also applies machine learning to radiogenomics, aiming to predict cancer biomarkers and molecular subtypes from low-dose perfusion CT imaging.

Inhibitory Effect of Ginsenoside Rb1 and Compound K on NO and Prostaglandin E2 Biosyntheses of RAW264.7 Cells Induced by Lipopolysaccharide
Eun-Kyung Park, Yong-Wook Shin, Hae-Ung Lee, Sung Soo Kim, Young-Churl Lee, Boo-Yong Lee, Dong‐Hyun Kim
SJR Q2Biological and Pharmaceutical BulletinOA

In this study, the antiinflammatory activities of ginsenoside Rb1, which is a main constituent of the root of Panax ginseng (Araliaceae), and of its metabolite compound K, as produced by human intestinal bacteria, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells were investigated. Compound K potently inhibited the production of NO and prostaglandin E2 in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells, with IC(50) values of 0.012 and 0.004 mM, respectively. Compound K also reduced the expression levels of the ind

Cranioplasty Enhanced by Three-Dimensional Printing
Eun-Kyung Park, Jun-Young Lim, In Sik Yun, Ju-Seong Kim, Su-Heon Woo, Dong-Seok Kim, Kyu‐Won Shim
SJR Q2Journal of Craniofacial SurgeryOA

The authors studied to demonstrate the efficacy of custom-made three-dimensional (3D)-printed titanium implants for reconstructing skull defects. From 2013 to 2015, 21 patients (8-62 years old, mean = 28.6-year old; 11 females and 10 males) with skull defects were treated. Total disease duration ranged from 6 to 168 months (mean = 33.6 months). The size of skull defects ranged from 84 × 104 to 154 × 193 mm. Custom-made implants were manufactured by Medyssey Co, Ltd (Jecheon, South Korea) using 3

Antiallergic Activity of Ginsenoside Rh2
Eun-Kyung Park, Min‐Kyung Choo, Eun‐jin Kim, Myung Joo Han, Dong‐Hyun Kim
SJR Q2Biological and Pharmaceutical BulletinOA

The antiallergic activities of ginsenosides, which were isolated from acid-treated ginseng (Panax ginseng, Araliaceae), and their metabolites by human intestinal bacteria were measured. Ginsenoside Rh2, which is a main metabolite, had the most potent inhibitory activity on beta-hexosaminidase release from RBL-2H3 cells and in the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction. The inhibitory activity of ginsenoside Rh2 was more potent than that of disodium cromoglycate, a commercial antiallergic drug. T

Ginsenoside Rh2 Reduces Ischemic Brain Injury in Rats
Eun-Kyung Park, Min‐Kyung Choo, Jin Kyung Oh, Jong Hoon Ryu, Dong‐Hyun Kim
SJR Q2Biological and Pharmaceutical BulletinOA

Ginseng was incubated under mildly acidic conditions and its inhibitory effect on a rat ischemia-reperfusion model was investigated. When ginseng was treated with 0.1% hydrochloric acid at 60 degrees C, its protopanaxadiol saponins were transformed to diasteromeric ginsenoside Rg3 and Delta20-ginsenoside Rg3. When the transformed ginseng extract, of which the main component was ginsenosides Rg3, was treated with human intestinal microflora, the main metabolite was ginsenoside Rh2. Orally adminis

Passive Cutaneous Anaphylaxis-Inhibitory Action of Tectorigenin, a Metabolite of Tectoridin by Intestinal Microflora
Eun-Kyung Park, Yong-Wook Shin, Hae-Ung Lee, Chang Soo Lee, Dong-Hyun Kim
SJR Q2Biological and Pharmaceutical BulletinOA

Tectoridin isolated from the flowers of Pueraria thunbergiana (Leguminosae) are metabolized to tectorigenin by human intestinal microflora. When tectoridin was orally administered to rats, tectorigenin, but not tectoridin, was detected in urine after beta-glucuronidase hydrolysis. The main metabolite tectorigenin potently inhibited the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reaction and inhibited in vitro the release of beta-hexosaminidase from RBL-2H3 cells induced by IgE. These results suggest that tec

Anti-Wrinkle Mechanism of Melatonin in UVB Treated HaCaT Keratinocytes and Hairless Mouse via Inhibition of ROS and Sonic Hedgehog Mediated Inflammatory Proteins
Eun-Kyung Park, Hyo‐Jung Lee, Hyemin Lee, Ju‐Ha Kim, Jisung Hwang, Sung‐Hoon Kim

Though melatonin is known to improve ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced oxidative damage and inflammatory conditions via blockade of nuclear factor (NF)-κB, interleukin (IL)-6, there is no report on anti-wrinkle effect of melatonin to date. Hence in the present study, anti-wrinkle mechanism of melatonin was elucidated in UVB treated HaCaT keratinocytes and hairless mice. Herein melatonin protected against a radical initiator tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH) induced reactive oxygen species (R

Supratentorial cortical ependymoma is a rare clinical entity where ependymoma occurring in the cortex without any connection to the ventricular system since ependymoma usually arises from the lining of the ventricular system or central canal of spinal cord. There have been 14 such cases reported in the literature. We report the first case of a supratentorial extraaxial cortical anaplastic ependymoma with minimal cortical attachment in a 17-years-old girl, presented with headache and complex parti

Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) in preterm infant is common, life-threatening and the main cause of bad developmental outcomes. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is used as the ultimate treatment for PHH. Low birth weight and low gestational age are the combination of worse prognostic factors while the single most important prognostic factor of VP shunting is age. Aggressive and early intervention have better effect in intraventricular hemorrhage and intracranial pressures control. It reduces
