About the Lab

Professor Eun Youn Roh's research lab focuses on regenerative medicine and translational biomedical research, with a strong emphasis on intervertebral disc degeneration, cord blood banking, and metabolic and cardiovascular disease biomarkers. The lab investigates gene therapy and biological interventions for discogenic lower back pain, explores human leukocyte antigen (HLA) diversity in Korean cord blood for transplantation applications, and examines the clinical associations of biomarkers such as CEA and HbA1c in metabolic disorders. The lab also contributes to public health by studying dyslipidemia trends and donor awareness in high-potential populations, bridging basic science with clinical and population health applications.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration can cause chronic lower back pain (LBP), leading to disability. Despite significant advances in the treatment of discogenic LBP, the limitations of current treatments have sparked interest in biological approaches, including growth factor and stem cell injection, as new treatment options for patients with chronic LBP due to IVD degeneration (IVDD). Gene therapy represents exciting new possibilities for IVDD treatment, but treatment is still in its infancy.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) distribution in 7096 Korean cord blood (CB) units preserved at the public CB bank was analyzed by using the polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific oligonucleotide probe (PCR-SSOP) method. A total of 14 HLA-A, 33 HLA-B, 13 HLA-DRB1 alleles and 2470 three-locus haplotypes were identified.
