About the Lab

Professor Eun Young Lee's research lab specializes in public health and environmental health sciences, with a focus on infectious disease epidemiology, health data analytics, and climate-sensitive environmental health. The lab conducts population-level studies using national claims and satellite big data to understand the burden and risk factors of HIV, Clostridium difficile infection, and sexually transmitted diseases. It also develops innovative educational tools integrating real-world data and technology—such as GUI-based sea surface temperature visualization—into science and health education. Additionally, the lab contributes to biological taxonomy through the discovery and characterization of new marine species, particularly in the field of bryophytes and marine algae.

Estimation of the Number of HIV Infections and Time to Diagnosis in the Korea
Eunyoung Lee, Jung-Mee Kim, Jin Yong Lee, Ji Hwan Bang
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

This study estimates the total burden of HIV infection in Korea for the first time using an internationally recognized HIV modeling tool. Claims data can be used to estimate the number of undiagnosed cases by identifying the total number of PLHIV and AIDS patients visiting health facilities.

Abstract Background A substantial portion of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) cases occur in communities, and community-onset CDI (CO-CDI) can lead to serious complications including mortality. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for a poor outcome in CO-CDI. Methods We performed a retrospective review of all inpatients with CDI, in a 1300-bed tertiary-care hospital in Korea, from 2008 through 2015. CO-CDI was defined as CDI occurring within 48 h of admission. Poor outcome was def

SJR Q2AIDS Care

Condomless sex is not totally discouraged after achieving undetectable human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) load, but the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the group is unknown. This study was retrospective in nature, using the claims database of the National Health Insurance system from 2008 to 2016. The clinical characteristics of people living with HIV with or without syphilis coinfection were analyzed. People with HIV and syphilis coinfection were divided into two groups ac

2007년 1월부터 2021년 12월까지 최근 15년간의 Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA) 인공위성

SJR Q2European Journal of Phycology

An elachistacean epiphyte, Neoleptonema yongpilii E.-Y. Lee & I.K. Lee, gen. et sp. nov., is reported from Korean coasts. The plants are distinguished by having unbranched assimilatory filaments with intercalary plurilocular sporangia as well as lateral plurilocular sporangia from the cortex. The new genus differs from the genera Leptonematella P. Silva and Halothrix Reinke by having pod-shaped plurilocular sporangia on the medulla, and from Elachista Duby and Proselachista Y.P. Lee & Ga

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

The study aimed to elucidate simple and effective risk factors for scabies infection in the medical environment for early detection and prevention of exposure to other patients and medical staff. We conducted a case-control study of patients who were diagnosed with scabies among hospitalized patients between 2008 and 2019 in an acute-care teaching hospital. Each case was matched according to sex and age with two randomly selected controls without scabies during hospitalization. Clinical characte

BACKGROUND: Zoster vaccination is recommended for people with a history of herpes zoster (HZ), but the most effective timing of vaccine administration after zoster illness is unresolved. This prospective observational study compared the immunogenicity and safety of administering HZ vaccine at 6-12 months and 1-5 years after zoster illness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samples were collected before the administration of live zoster vaccine and 6 weeks after vaccination. Varicella-zoster virus (VZ

SJR Q2AIDS Care

The epidemiological characteristics of women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have gained little attention as the numbers are small compared with men living with HIV in the Republic of Korea. However, these data are important to achieve effective HIV infection control and to consider the influence of socioeconomic status on HIV transmission. This study utilized the claims database of the Korean National Health Insurance system to analyze women with a newly diagnosed HIV i

AIM: Delirium during acute infection is associated with poor outcomes, although research is limited due to the heterogenous nature of affected populations. Identifying risk factors for delirium can help differentiate high-risk patients. METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out at a single COVID-19 designated hospital in Korea between February 2020 and May 2022. It analyzed the clinical and laboratory characteristics of COVID-19 patients aged ≥75 years. COVID-19, ranging from mild to sev
