About the Lab
Professor Eun-Young Moon's research lab focuses on understanding the interplay between biological systems and human behavior in digital and collaborative environments. The lab investigates mitochondrial dynamics in bone formation, exploring how cellular components like mitochondria and mitochondrial-derived vesicles regulate osteogenesis through signaling pathways such as CD38/cADPR. Concurrently, the lab examines human dynamics in online social systems, particularly in blogospheres and free/libre open source software (FLOSS) communities, with an emphasis on influence modeling, information diffusion, and the sociocultural factors affecting participation and sustainability. The research integrates biological mechanisms with computational modeling and social theory to uncover underlying principles of bursty human behavior, modularity in software development, and gendered norms in digital collaboration.

15Mitochondrial components have been abundantly detected in bone matrix, implying that they are somehow transported extracellularly to regulate osteogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that mitochondria and mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs) are secreted from mature osteoblasts to promote differentiation of osteoprogenitors.
