About the Lab

Professor Eunkyung Kim's research lab focuses on the central regulation of energy homeostasis, with a particular emphasis on the role of hypothalamic signaling pathways—especially AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and autophagy—in controlling feeding behavior and body weight. The lab investigates how metabolic sensors like AMPK integrate nutrient signals to regulate neuropeptides such as NPY and POMC, and explores the crosstalk between metabolism, autophagy, and cellular survival in neuroendocrine and metabolic tissues. Additional research extends to the pathophysiology of cardiomyopathy and cancer cell migration, highlighting the broader implications of metabolic and proteolytic regulation in disease. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach combining molecular biology, cell culture, animal models, and advanced imaging techniques to dissect metabolic and cellular mechanisms in health and disease.

Energy homeostasis and feeding are regulated by the central nervous system. C75, a fatty acid synthase (FAS) inhibitor, causes weight loss and anorexia, implying a novel central nervous system pathway(s) for sensing energy balance. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a sensor of peripheral energy balance, is phosphorylated and activated when energy sources are low. Here, we identify a role for hypothalamic AMPK in the regulation of feeding behavior and in mediating the anorexic effects of C75.
