About the Lab
Professor Fabian Rotermund's research lab specializes in the design and synthesis of advanced functional materials for biomedical and environmental applications. Key research directions include the rational engineering of semiconductor nanocrystals with tailored morphologies for optoelectronic and catalytic applications, the development of stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems using polymer-caged liposomes and nanobins for synergistic cancer therapy, and the creation of bio-inks based on decellularized extracellular matrix for tissue engineering and 3D bioprinting. The lab also investigates carbon materials activation for energy and environmental applications, emphasizing structural control and functional optimization.

15We demonstrate a novel synthetic scheme that can be used to differentially guide the shape of PbS semiconductor nanocrystals. Our study first demonstrates the discovery of single-crystalline star-shaped nanocrystals as novel transient species. We then carefully probe their shape evolution toward other novel nanostructures (e.g., tadpole-, L-, T-, cross-shapes, highly faceted star shapes, truncated octahedrons and cubes, etc.) and systematically elucidate the key parameters that control these fin
In the present study, carbon black activated by CO2 gas was examined through XRD analysis, especially with regard to changes in its structural parameters. Based on the results, its activation process was thoroughly analyzed. The activation process was controlled by isothermally activating the carbon black inside a reaction tube through which CO2 gas flowed. With this approach, the degree of activation was varied as desired. At an early stage of the activation process, the amorphous fraction on t
Polymer-incorporated liposomes were prepared from preformed liposomes and a cholesterol-functionalized poly(acrylic acid) additive via a simple drop-in procedure. These modified liposomes possess surface-active carboxylate groups that can be cross-linked with telechelic 2,2‘-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) linkers, resulting in polymer-caged liposomes (PCLs) that are highly stable and have tunable pH-sensitive responses.
Multicomponent chemotherapy has increasingly become a strategy of great importance in clinical cancer treatments. However, this type of chemotherapy has not been demonstrated in nanoscale delivery vehicles where two cytotoxic agents can be packaged together, potentially leading to synergistic drug activities. Herein, we present the codelivery of doxorubicin and cisplatin via a single polymer-caged nanobin (PCN) and show that copackaging can yield strong synergy in the efficacy of these agents. S
Recently, decellularized extracellular matrix-based bio-ink (dECM bio-ink) derived from animal organs is attracting attention because of its excellent biocompatibility. However, its poor 3D printability and weak mechanical properties remain a challenge. Here, we developed a new dECM bio-ink with enhanced 3D printability and mechanical properties. dECM micro-particles of about 13.4 μm in size were prepared by decellularizing a porcine liver followed by freeze-milling. The new bio-ink, named as dE
Since the 1960s, stimuli-responsive polymers have been utilized as functional soft materials for biological applications such as the triggered-release delivery of biologically active cargos. Over the same period, liposomes have been explored as an alternative drug delivery system with potentials to decrease the toxic side effects often associated with conventional small-molecule drugs. However, the lack of drug-release triggers and the instability of bare liposomes often limit their practical ap
This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary astaxanthin levels on growth performance, feed utilization, muscle pigmentation, and antioxidant capacity in juvenile rainbow trout. Four experimental diets were formulated to contain 0, 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg astaxanthin (designed as AX0, AX50, AX75, and AX100). Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (18.5 g/fish) for 10 weeks. Growth performance and muscle composition of fish were not affected by dietary astaxanthin levels. T
Graphite can be classified into natural graphite from mines and artificial graphite. Due to its outstanding properties such as light weight, thermal resistance, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, chemical stability, and high-temperature strength, artificial graphite is used across various industries in powder form and bulk form. Artificial graphite of powder form is usually used as anode materials for secondary cells, while artificial graphite of bulk form is used in steelmaking elec
Modularly clickable polymer-caged nanobins (PCNs) were prepared from liposome templates using a drop-in cholesterol-modified poly(acrylic acid) reagent followed by cross-linking with alkyne-functionalized diamine linker that allows for the conjugation of azide-modified targeting ligands via click ligation. These PCNs possess pH-responsive characteristics that can be used to trigger the release of encapsulated doxorubicin (DXR) payload inside the liposomal core under mild acidic conditions. After
