About the Lab

Professor Ga-eun Nam's research lab focuses on epidemiological and population-based studies examining the interplay between obesity, metabolic syndrome, and chronic disease outcomes in the Korean population. The lab investigates the long-term health impacts of weight variability, abdominal obesity, and reproductive health factors such as menopause on cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Utilizing large-scale national health datasets, the lab aims to inform public health policy and preventive strategies tailored to the Korean context.

The 2019 Obesity Fact Sheet provides information on changes in obesity dynamics during the past decade and obesity-related social factors in the Korean adult population. This report might constitute a cornerstone by which to establish targets for future interventions for reversing the rise in the prevalence of obesity and reducing the burden of obesity in Korea.

SJR Q1Journal of Obesity & Metabolic SyndromeOA

Based on the 2020 Obesity Fact Sheet, there was a dramatic increase in the prevalence of class II and III obesity from 2009 to 2018 among young adults, as well as the population as a whole. Optimal strategies for the prevention and treatment of obesity are needed considering the recent obesity epidemic in South Korea.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and type 2 diabetes are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and mortality, and they commonly result in weight variabilities. We aimed to investigate the association between body weight variability and risk of major cardiovascular outcomes and mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes using large-scale, nationwide cohort data on the Korean population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We enrolled 624,237 individuals with type 2 diabetes who underwent health examinations pro

Perspective on Diagnostic Criteria for Obesity and Abdominal Obesity in Korean Adults
Ga Eun Nam, Hye Soon Park
SJR Q1Journal of Obesity & Metabolic SyndromeOA

Excessive body weight is associated with increased health risks in humans. In general, the risk of mortality increases with greater obesity. The 2018 guideline for the management of obesity by the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity proposed the body mass index (BMI) cut-off levels of 25 kg/m2 and 23 kg/m2 as diagnostic criteria for obesity and overweight (pre-obese) in Korean adults, respectively. Abdominal obesity has been defined as waist circumference (WC) ≥90 cm in

AIMS: This study aimed to examine the association of premature menopause and age at menopause with the risk of heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 1 401 175 postmenopausal women, who had undergone health examination provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service, were included, and their reproductive histories were collected. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were performed to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence i

Abstract Background The roles of chronic kidney disease and proteinuria in the development of Parkinson's disease have not been widely studied. The objective of this study was to examine the associations of chronic renal dysfunction and proteinuria with the risk of PD in older adults using cohort data of the whole South Korean population. Methods We included 3,580,435 individuals aged ≥65 years who had undergone health checkups provided by the National Health Insurance Service of South Korea bet

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin D insufficiency is known to be related to cardiometabolic disorders; however, the associations among serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration and metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents have not yet been clearly delineated. For this reason, we investigated the relationship among serum 25(OH)D concentration and metabolic syndrome and cardiometabolic risk factors among Korean adolescents. DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional ana
