About the Lab

Professor Geon Hong's research lab specializes in clinical and translational liver transplantation research, with a strong focus on improving donor safety, optimizing graft selection, and enhancing outcomes in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). The lab investigates anatomical and immunological factors affecting biliary complications, explores gender-specific approaches to metabolic and urological comorbidities, and evaluates risk stratification tools such as the MELD score in the Korean population. Additionally, the lab is actively researching innovative immunomodulatory strategies, including cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell therapy, for hepatocellular carcinoma patients beyond standard criteria.

Major concerns about donor safety cause controversy and limit the use of living donor liver transplantation to overcome organ shortages. The Korean Organ Transplantation Registry established a nationwide organ transplantation registration system in 2014. We reviewed the prospectively collected data of all 832 living liver donors who underwent procedures between April 2014 and December 2015. We allocated the donors to a left lobe group (n = 59) and a right lobe group (n = 773) and analyzed the re

Correlation between Metabolic Syndrome and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms of Males and Females in the Aspect of Gender-Specific Medicine: A Single Institutional Study
Geun Hong, Bong Suk Shim, Woo Sik Chung, Hana Yoon
Korean journal of urologyOA

There are sex differences in the morbidity rate of metabolic syndrome and its effect on lower urinary tract symptoms. Therefore, it is necessary to consider gender-specific medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of LUTS.

The anatomy of the RPBD of the donor influenced the biliary outcome in the recipients. A short RBD and a long caudal segment of the RPBD of the donor were significant risk factors for biliary complications in LDLT.

The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease Score-Based System Predicts Short Term Mortality Better Than the Current Child-Turcotte-Pugh Score-Based Allocation System during Waiting for Deceased Liver Transplantation

To adopt the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score-based system in Korea, the feasibility should be evaluated by analysis of Korean database. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of the MELD score-based system compared with the current Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) based-system and to suggest adequate cut-off to stratify waiting list mortality among Korean population. We included 788 adult patients listed in waiting list in Seoul National University Hospital from January

Preoperative Selective Desensitization of Live Donor Liver Transplant Recipients Considering the Degree of T Lymphocyte Cross-Match Titer, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease Score, and Graft Liver Volume

Several studies have suggested that a positive lymphocyte cross-matching (XM) is associated with low graft survival rates and a high prevalence of acute rejection after adult living donor liver transplantations (ALDLTs) using a small-for-size graft. However, there is still no consensus on preoperative desensitization. We adopted the desensitization protocol from ABO-incompatible LDLT. We performed desensitization for the selected patients according to the degree of T lymphocyte cross-match titer

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant immunotherapy with autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains understudied in liver transplant patients because of potential risks of acute rejection and diminished efficacy by immunosuppression. METHODS: This study examined the safety and effectiveness of CIK therapy in patients with HCC exceeding the Milan criteria, treated at 2 Korean hospitals between 2019 and 2021. We analyzed clinical outcomes of 16 patients who underwent

Korean Journal of TransplantationOA

Background: Adjuvant immunotherapy with autologous cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells has shown promise postsurgery, yet research concerning hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients postliver transplantation remains sparse. This scarcity is in part due to the immunosuppressive therapy required posttransplantation, which may elevate the risk of acute cellular rejection, potentially diminishing the efficacy of immunotherapy.Furthermore, the generally lower recurrence rate posttransplantation within

Nonsurgical removal of migrated polytetrafluoroethylene graft used for middle hepatic vein reconstruction in stomach 10 years after living donor liver transplantation
Geun Hong, Seung Hwan Song
Korean Journal of TransplantationOA

Most centers use polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts for middle hepatic vein reconstruction in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). PTFE graft may cause some complications such as thrombosis, infection, migration, etc. There are some reports that the complications result in life-threatening septic shock. The migrations of PTFE graft into hollow viscous organs usually are managed by surgery. We present nonsurgical removal of migrated PTFE graft in stomach 10 years after LDLT. Recipient wa
