About the Lab
Professor Giap Hai Van's research lab specializes in clinical and translational orthodontic research, with a strong focus on dental implant biomechanics, orthodontic tooth movement, and the biological responses of alveolar bone to orthodontic forces. The lab employs advanced imaging techniques such as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and micro-CT to investigate bone remodeling, transverse dental expansion, and the outcomes of orthodontic and periodontal interventions. Key research directions include the development and evaluation of zirconia orthodontic brackets, the biomechanical assessment of skeletal and soft tissue changes during maxillary expansion, and the management of complex conditions like medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).

15Maxillary expansion using MSEs resulted in significant lateral and forward movements of the soft tissues of cheek and alar curvature points on both sides in young adults and correlated with the maxillary suture opening at the ANS and PNS.
This in vitro study evaluated comprehensively the performances of zirconia brackets with varying yttria proportions in manufacturing advanced orthodontic brackets. Three experimental groups of zirconia brackets were fabricated using yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) materials with different yttria proportions-3 mol% yttria (3Y-YSZ), 4 mol% yttria (4Y-YSZ), and 5 mol% yttria (5Y-YSZ) (Tosoh Ceramic, Japan). A polycrystalline alumina ceramic bracket (3M™ Clarity™ Advanced, MBT 0.022-in. slot) was e
Borderline crowding poses a challenge in deciding whether or not to prescribe premolar extraction. This case report describes the two-phase nonextraction orthodontic treatment of an 11-year-old girl with a hyperdivergent skeletal Class I pattern exhibiting anterior crowding and moderate lip protrusion. The initial phase of treatment included maxillary and mandibular expansion to correct the transverse discrepancy as an early intervention. Subsequently, comprehensive treatment was initiated at th
Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the age-related changes in the bony recession and cortical bone remodeling induced by lateral orthodontic tooth movement, using a three-dimensional micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis. Material and Methods: A total of 40 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two distinct age groups (young, 10 weeks and adult, 52 weeks). Double-helical springs exerting 40 g of force were applied to central incisors to analysis of changes in lateral cortical
The mean BABT and BART at the central position, in which we suggest placing vertical TSADs, were 3.44 ± 0.69 mm in CBCT and 6.28 ± 1.11 mm in the digital model, respectively. The minimum BABT and BART at the central position in which vertical TSAD was placed successfully were 2.38 mm in CBCT and 4.25 mm in the digital model. There was a strong correlation between centralCBCT and centralModel, and we developed a linear regression model that resulted in a useful formula for e
Conservative orthodontic treatment for severe pathologic migration following total glossectomy: A case report Glossectomy combined with radiotherapy causes different levels of tongue function disorders and leads to severe malocclusion, with poor periodontal status in cancer survivors. Although affected patients require regular access to orthodontic care, special considerations are crucial for treatment planning. This case report describes the satisfactory orthodontic management for the correctio
This retrospective study evaluated changes in lesion bone density and volume in medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) at different disease stages following conservative and surgical treatment. Additionally, the study analyzed the correlations between these changes and influencing factors. A total of 54 patients (mean [SD] age, 75.43 [7.44] years) diagnosed with stage 0, 1, 2, or 3 MRONJ, according to the American Association of Oral and Ma
This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia orthodontic brackets under different surface pretreatment protocols to identify an optimal bonding strategy for clinical applications. Zirconia brackets (n = 94) were fabricated using 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia powder and a ceramic injection molding technique. The bracket base was treated using one of the following: no treatment (Control), traditional alumina sandblasting (Group I), traditional alumina sandblasting with a 10-M
Objectives: This study was aimed to compare the histological pattern of bone modeling on either periodontal or periosteal side induced by lateral orthodontic tooth movement in different age groups. Material and Methods: A total of 50 male Sprague-Dawley rats (25 rats in the adult group – 52 weeks and 25 rats in the young group – 10 weeks) were utilized in this study. Each age group was classified into the control, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, and 21 days groups (five rats in each) by the duration of
In this case report, we show a strategic approach to prolonging the lifespan of pathologically migrated maxillary canines with a hopeless prognosis in a 57-year-old female patient, highlighting the potential of orthodontic management for middle-aged patients to enhance both occlusion and facial esthetics while minimizing the need for extensive prosthetic treatment. According to the visual treatment objective, the nonextraction treatment plan showed advantages in the type of orthodontic tooth mov
Abstract Background The aim of this study was to assess the mid-facial soft tissue changes induced by a micro-implant-supported maxillary skeletal expander in late adolescents and young adults by cone-beam computerized tomography and the correlations between hard and soft tissue changes after expansion with maxillary skeletal expander.Subjects and methods Twenty patients with maxillary transverse deficiency treated with maxillary skeletal expander were selected. Cone-beam computerized tomography
