About the Lab
Professor Gilsu Son's research lab specializes in diagnostic and interventional radiology, with a strong focus on advanced medical imaging techniques for cancer detection, characterization, and prognosis. The lab investigates the integration of medical imaging with molecular and genomic data—particularly through radiogenomics and machine learning—to improve the accuracy of breast cancer and thyroid cancer diagnosis. Key research directions include the application of perfusion CT, MRI, and ultrasound techniques (such as CEUS and SMI) to assess tumor vascularity, lymph node involvement, and histologic features, as well as evaluating surgical outcomes in adrenal and thyroid cancers.

15US microflow assessment using SMI and CEUS is valuable in distinguishing malignant from benign solid breast masses, and US vascular parameters are associated with histologic MVD.
Hematological malignancies rarely affect the breast, and the majority of those that do are lymphomas. In this review, we describe the clinical aspects and multimodal imaging findings of breast lymphoma. We also illustrate the key clinical and radiological findings that allow it to be distinguished from various other malignant and benign diseases of the breast. Breast lymphoma manifests as a breast mass, a change in the subcutaneous tissue or the skin, or enlargement of the associated lymph node
BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of computer-aided detection (CAD) for MRI in the assessment of tumor extent, lymph node status, and multifocality in invasive breast cancers in comparison with other breast imaging modalities. METHODS: Two radiologists measured the maximum tumor size, as well as, analyzed lymph node status and multifocality in 86 patients with invasive breast cancers using mammography, ultrasound, CT, MRI with and without CAD, and 18-fludeoxyglucose positron emiss
CLNM in PTMC is highly prevalent in male sex, tumor size ≥ 0.5 cm, extrathyroidal extension, and multifocality. Even in PTMC patients without these risk factors, the incidence of CLNM is rather higher than expected, and the complication rate of thyroidectomy with CLND is acceptable. Thus, CLND should be considered in all patients with PTMC.
Radiogenomics investigates the relationship between imaging phenotypes and genetic expression. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease that manifests complex genetic changes and various prognosis and treatment response. We investigate the value of machine learning approaches to radiogenomics using low-dose perfusion computed tomography (CT) to predict prognostic biomarkers and molecular subtypes of invasive breast cancer. This prospective study enrolled a total of 723 cases involving 241 patien
BACKGROUND: Although several recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility and safety of robotic adrenalectomy, it is unknown whether this procedure has advantages over the traditional laparoscopic approach. This study compared our initial experience using the da Vinci-S® robotic surgical system during laparoscopic adrenalectomy with our experience with traditional laparoscopic adrenalectomy. METHODS: From October 2009 to May 2012, 23 consecutive patients (13 women, 10 men) underwent laparosc
In order to evaluate the role of BRCA1 and BRCA2 germline mutations in Korean patients with sporadic breast cancer, 97 patients with sporadic breast cancer were analyzed for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 coding regions, by using a combination of fluorescent-conformation sensitive gel electrophoresis (F-CSGE) and direct sequencing. Fifty-five distinct sequence variants were detected, which included three pathogenic truncating mutations, 15 missense mutations, 16 polymorphisms, and 21 intronic
Robotic thyroidectomy using BABA may be a technically feasible and safe procedure comparable to conventional open surgery especially in node-negative patients.
PURPOSE: The incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) arising from the isthmus is low; however, these tumors have aggressive clinical and pathological features. Moreover, the existing guidelines regarding the extent of surgery for this type of tumor are unclear. METHODS: This study enrolled 282 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy with bilateral central lymph node dissection. The patients were divided into 2 groups based on the location of the median line of the PTC. Group I included
Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) of the stomach in adults is extremely rare, with unpredictable prognosis. We present a 55-year-old woman with a gastric IMT. She experienced sudden abdominal pain 4 d previously. Physical examination showed mild abdominal tenderness in the hypogastrium, but no palpable abnormal abdominal mass. Abdominal CT showed a mass of approximately 8 cm in the gastrocolic ligament. On laparoscopic exploration, unexpected hemoperitoneum of approximately 1.5 L of blood
Compared to endoscopic thyroidectomy, robotic transaxillary thyroidectomy involved a shorter time for inferior pole dissection and PTGs and RLN identification; moreover, more PTGs were spared using this procedure.
