About the Lab
Professor Guk-Jung Gu's research lab specializes in regional climate dynamics, with a focus on seasonal to interannual climate variability in East Asia and the Korean Peninsula. The lab investigates the impacts of tropical Pacific climate phenomena—particularly El Niño events—on East Asian weather patterns, including monsoon systems, cold surges, and extreme temperature events. Using observational data, reanalysis, and seasonal prediction models, the lab explores teleconnections, intraseasonal variability, and the sensitivity of precipitation and temperature responses to global warming. A key emphasis is placed on improving climate prediction skill through understanding present-day climate states and their influence on future climate change.
