About the Lab
Professor Gwang-Chul Ko's research lab specializes in hepatology and gastroenterology, with a primary focus on chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk, and the long-term outcomes of antiviral therapy in patients with liver cirrhosis. The lab investigates virological responses to nucleos(t)ide analogues, the clinical significance of low-level viremia, and the effectiveness of interventional therapies such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and transarterial chemoembolization in small hepatocellular carcinomas. Additionally, the lab explores infectious complications like nosocomial spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhotic patients, emphasizing microbiological and clinical outcomes in hospitalized populations.

15A certain proportion of Korean patients started therapy with a higher than targeted ribavirin dose, which resulted in more ribavirin dose modifications without definite additional benefit in achieving SVR. Therefore, the ribavirin dosing regimen might need to be reassessed.
Despite a higher rate of local recurrence, RFA was found to be as effective as surgical resection for the treatment of single small HCC in patients with well-preserved liver function, in terms of the incidence of remote recurrence and the patients' likelihood of achieving overall and/or recurrence-free survival.
The long-term clinical impact of low-level viremia (LLV; <2,000 IU/mL) is not well understood. As a result, it is unclear whether the development of LLV during entecavir monotherapy requires a change in therapy. A retrospective cohort of 875 treatment-naive chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) monoinfected patients (mean age 47.7 years, male = 564 [65.5%], cirrhosis = 443 [50.6%]) who received entecavir monotherapy were analyzed for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The HCC risk was
BACKGROUND: There have been few reports on the causes and treatment outcomes for nosocomial spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in patients with liver cirrhosis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study to compare the microbiological and clinical characteristics in nosocomial versus community-acquired SBP. All patients with SBP, for whom culture was proven to be positive for SBP at Samsung Medical Center (Seoul, Republic of Korea) from 1 January 2000 through 31 June 2007, were incl
BACKGROUND: It is generally stated that oral antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) decreases the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although oral nucleos(t)ide analogues (NUCs) may induce a state similar to inactive stage CHB, the long-term risk for HCC in patients treated with NUCs compared with inactive CHB is unclear. METHODS: A total of 1378 patients who were treatment naïve and started NUC therapy and 1014 patients with inactive stage CHB who were HBeA
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of three-phase helical dynamic CT in the detection and characterization of hepatocellular carcinomas and dysplastic nodules in cirrhotic livers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Three-phase helical dynamic CT in 41 patients with liver cirrhosis was evaluated prospectively before orthotopic liver transplantation. The numbers of hepatocellular carcinomas and dysplastic nodules were assessed in the explanted livers and compared with
The results of power Doppler US with a microbubble contrast agent in HCCs treated with RF ablation correlated well with those of contrast-enhanced CT. Preliminary data suggest that contrast-enhanced power Doppler US can be a promising noninvasive technique for assessing therapeutic response.
BACKGROUND: A limited number of studies have characterized genomic properties of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients in response to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy. METHODS: Herein, we performed comprehensive molecular characterization of immediate (D-42 to D-1) pre-treatment tumor biopsy specimens from 60 patients with sorafenib-failed HCC in a single-arm prospective phase II trial of pembrolizumab. Objective response rate was the primary efficacy endpoint. We used whole-exome sequencing, RNA seque
UNLABELLED: Controversy exists about whether antiviral therapy (AVT) should be recommended for compensated cirrhosis patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and detectable, but low, serum HBV-DNA levels. A retrospective cohort of 385 treatment-naïve, HBV-related compensated cirrhosis patients (mean age: 51.1 ± 9.7 years; 66% male) with low HBV-DNA levels (<2,000 IU/mL) was assessed for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). During a median of 5.6 years of follow-up, H
US-NAFLD was an independent predictor for IR, irrespective of the number of metabolic components of MetS in the non-obese, non-diabetic middle-aged Asian adults. US-NAFLD could identify individuals with IR that cannot be identified by MetS in this population.
