About the Lab

Professor Gwangpyo Ko's research lab focuses on the intricate interplay between host genetics, the gut and vaginal microbiomes, and metabolic or infectious diseases. The lab investigates how microbial communities influence conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, metabolic syndrome, and viral infections, with a particular emphasis on host-microbe interactions in Asian populations. Using multi-omics approaches, twin studies, and preclinical models, the lab explores the roles of specific bacterial taxa and microbial metabolites in immune modulation and disease progression. A key focus is identifying probiotic strains and host factors that can be leveraged for microbiome-based therapeutics.
