About the Lab
Professor Ha Min Kim's research lab specializes in interdisciplinary biomedical and materials science research, focusing on probiotics and their functional properties in human and veterinary health, the synthesis and characterization of advanced nanomaterials such as III-V nanocrystals for optoelectronic applications, and innovative genomic technologies for spatially resolved analysis of cancer genomes. The lab also investigates the molecular mechanisms of disease through clinical and translational studies, including sepsis scoring systems and the impact of glaucoma medications on wound healing. These diverse research directions reflect a strong commitment to advancing both fundamental science and clinical applications.

15The role of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as probiotics as health promoting factors for human or veterinary practice has gained increasing interest during the last three decades. This is reflected in screening approaches of LAB strains in line with minimal requirements for a "probiotic" with regard to safety and functionality. The latter might also include natural antioxidant properties, thereby constituting an additional benefit in substituting synthetic antioxidants. The in vitro antioxidant assa
Despite the technological importance of colloidal covalent III-V nanocrystals with unique optoelectronic properties, their synthetic process still has challenges originating from the complex energy landscape of the reaction. Here, we present InP tetrapod nanocrystals as a crystalline late intermediate in the synthetic pathway that warrants controlled growth. We isolate tetrapod intermediate species with well-defined surfaces of (110) and ([Formula: see text]) via the suppression of further growt
Determining mutational landscapes in a spatial context is essential for understanding genetically heterogeneous cell microniches. Current approaches, such as Multiple Displacement Amplification (MDA), offer high genome coverage but limited multiplexing, which hinders large-scale spatial genomic studies. Here, we introduce barcoded MDA (bMDA), a technique that achieves high-coverage genomic analysis of low-input DNA while enhancing the multiplexing capabilities. By incorporating cell barcodes dur
Anionic polymerization of AB-type difunctional monomers derived from 4-vinyl-1,1-diphenylethylene ( VD ) bearing styrene and 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE) frameworks was examined using diphenylmethylpotassium (Ph 2 CHK) in THF at −78 to 0 °C. A series of substituents including chloro ( ClVD ), methyl ( MeVD ), methoxy ( MeOVD ), and dimethylamino ( Me2NVD ) groups were introduced at the 4′-position of the VD framework to vary the polymerizability of VD . In each case, the resulting polymer was solu
The applicability of the Phoenix criteria and Phoenix Sepsis Score in higher-resource pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) outside the United States requires further validation. A retrospective cohort study analyzed electronic health records of 1,304 PICU admissions under 18 years old with suspected infection between February 2017 and December 2023. The score was calculated using two methods: 24-hour assessment, based on worst sub-scores within 24 hours of admission, and prompt assessment, usi
In this study evaluation of the beneficial properties and survival for eight LAB putative probiotic strain was conducted including their ability to survive at different ox-bile concentrations and in the models representing different parts of digestive tract, ability to produce diacetyl, GABA and specific enzymes. The survival rates and release rates of the cells under the SSDP and AOS models were evaluated by encapsula¬tion using sodium alginate. Interaction between studied LAB and the pathogen
An 81-year-old man with primary open-angle glaucoma on dorzolamide-timolol, bimatoprost and 0.02% netarsudil ophthalmic solution (Rhopressa), was found to have right lower lid basal cell carcinoma. The patient underwent Mohs surgery followed by repair of the right lower lid, with 3 episodes of wound dehiscence. When stopping netarsudil, appropriate granulation tissue was able to develop. While off netarsudil, the patient underwent Mohs resection of a left lower lid basal cell carcinoma, which wa
Serum total IgE and food-specific IgE combined with age showed trends toward passing OFCs for confirming tolerance development. The constructed model may be used by clinicians as a practical guide for minimizing the risks of OFCs and a timely reintroduction for children with food allergies.
Encoded microparticles have great potential in small-volume multiplexed assays. It is important to link the micro-level assays to the macro-level by indexing and manipulating the microparticles to enhance their versatility. There are technologies to actively manipulate the encoded microparticles, but none is capable of directly manipulating the encoded microparticles with homogeneous physical properties. Here, we report the image-based laser-induced forward transfer system for active manipulatio
A comprehensive error analysis of DNA-stored data during processing, such as DNA synthesis and sequencing, is crucial for reliable DNA data storage. Both synthesis and sequencing errors depend on the sequence and the transition of bases of nucleotides; ignoring either one of the error sources leads to technical challenges in minimizing the error rate. Here, we present a methodology and toolkit that utilizes an oligonucleotide library generated from a 10-base-shifted sequence array, which is indi
Gadolinium oxide-based compounds are employed for the first time in the fabrication of dual-stimuli-responsive smart fluids that respond to both electric and magnetic fields.
PRECIS: The region of glaucomatous progression, seen on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images of the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (cRNFL), increases in width and depth in all eyes, but shows a variety of different patterns of loss across eyes. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of cRNFL loss secondary to glaucomatous progression in a region associated with the superior hemifield of the 24-2/30-2 visual field (VF). METHODS: Twenty-four eyes (20 patient
