About the Lab

Professor Hak-Joon Kim's research lab specializes in molecular and translational biomedical research, focusing on tissue regeneration, particularly in tendon and bone healing. The lab investigates growth factors such as BMP-2, TGF-β, and IGF-II, and their roles in modulating signaling pathways like Src-ERK1/2 and PI3K in angiogenesis and tissue repair. Utilizing animal models and biomaterial carriers like fibrin glue, the lab explores innovative strategies to enhance healing at the bone-tendon junction and other musculoskeletal interfaces. The work also extends to clinical applications, including the evaluation of biomaterial safety and the mechanisms of soft tissue repair.

Escherichia coli diacylglycerol kinase (DAGK) represents a family of integral membrane enzymes that is unrelated to all other phosphotransferases. We have determined the three-dimensional structure of the DAGK homotrimer with the use of solution nuclear magnetic resonance. The third transmembrane helix from each subunit is domain-swapped with the first and second transmembrane segments from an adjacent subunit. Each of DAGK's three active sites resembles a portico. The cornice of the portico app

Bone-tendon junction injuries have poor healing potential. This study evaluated the role of TGF-beta and BMP-2 in a fibrin glue carrier in healing of injuries at bone-tendon junction. Seventy-two skeletally mature male rabbits were divided into 4 groups. The tendo-Achilles was surgically transected at its insertion and reattached with a pullout suture. Group 1 served as a control. In groups 2, 3, and 4, fibrin glue, a mixture of TGF-beta and fibrin glue, and a mixture of BMP-2 and fibrin glue we
