About the Lab
Professor Hakyung Jeong's research lab specializes in theoretical and computational linguistics, with a primary focus on syntactic theory, morphosyntax, and language change. The lab investigates the syntactic architecture of possessive, modal, and perfect constructions in Slavic languages—particularly Russian and Old East Slavic—within a generative framework. A central theme is the interplay between case marking, verbal nominalization, and ergative alignment, with a strong emphasis on diachronic change, including degrammaticalization processes such as the reanalysis of pronominal clitics. The lab also explores syntactic reanalysis triggered by morphological simplification, such as the loss of tense distinctions.

15This book is the first attempt to provide a unified account of the be- possessive syntax and its extension to the modal and the perfect constructions in Russian/North Russian within a generative framework. Apparently diverse constructions are construed as deriving from the have/be parameter, which depends on the utilization of the prepositional complementizer with a Case feature. The be -perfect structure provides an adequate environment where ergativity is encoded via verbal nominalization. The
The IEEE 802.11 standards support multiple bit rates at the physical layer so that stations can maximize the system performance by controlling the transmission rate responding to the conditions of underlying time-varying channels. This paper proposes a novel scheme, termed as rate adaptation using rate-adaptive acknowledgment (RARA). The key idea of RARA is to regulate the ACK transmission rate as a means to dictate the sender to adjust the data transmission rate. Compared with previous works, t

This paper examines the reanalysis of pronominal clitics as weak pronouns in the Slavic languages. It demonstrates that the change occurred historically in Old Polish and Old Russian, and that currently it is also taking place in Macedonian. We interpret the reanalysis as a case of degrammaticalization. We assume that in syntactic terms degrammaticalization involves the reinterpretation of heads as phrasal elements. Furthermore, the paper identifies the trigger of the process, which is the weake

Abstract It has been widely assumed in the literature that the be -modal construction with dative subject in Indo-European languages developed from the existential/possessive sentence in the form of mihi est ‘me DAT there is.’ This paper offers two types of language-internal evidence in favor of this hypothesis for the dative-infinitive modal construction (DIM) in Russian. The first evidence is the nominative object marking and the OV word order in the DIM in Old North Russian. The other comes f
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the tactile sensation and mechanical properties of towel. Six kinds of towels with different surface structure and fiber composition were used for this study. To evaluate the tactility of towel, 36 adjectives were collected and then 11 adjectives were selected. The subjective evaluation was examined by one to one comparative method and by blind test for estimating the only the sense of touch of the towels. Kawabata's Evaluation s
This paper introduces a new split-TCP approach for improving TCP performance over IEEE 802.11-based wireless LANs. TCP over wireless LANs is not aggressive, which is a fundamental reason for poor performance. We propose augmented split-TCP (AS-TCP) to mitigate this problem. Our scheme extends the split-connection approach that divides a connection into two different connections at a split point such as an access point. Using AS-TCP, a mobile host emulates TCP ACK packets using MAC ACK frames, in

This paper investigates licensing of the nominative case without accompanying predicate-agreement with the nominative DP in many languages, including Old Russian and Contemporary North Russian. I have examined morphological approaches, such as Disjunctive Case Hierarchy and Default Case, as well as syntactic analyses, centering on AGREE, to determine which solution more adequately explains the current data and the case system in general. The phenomenon of non-agreeing nominatives is more effecti
