About the Lab
Professor Han-earl Jo's research lab specializes in health informatics, clinical prediction modeling, and digital health interventions, with a focus on leveraging large-scale population health data and artificial intelligence to improve early diagnosis and management of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. The lab investigates the reliability and educational quality of health information disseminated through social media platforms, particularly for conditions like scoliosis and Alzheimer’s disease, while also evaluating the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions such as intrathecal baclofen in neuromuscular and neurodegenerative conditions. Their work bridges clinical medicine, data science, and public health policy to enhance patient outcomes and health system efficiency.

15Abstract Nationwide population-based cohort provides a new opportunity to build an automated risk prediction model based on individuals’ history of health and healthcare beyond existing risk prediction models. We tested the possibility of machine learning models to predict future incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using large-scale administrative health data. From the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between 2002 and 2010, we obtained de-identified health data in elders above
Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) has been known to reduce spasticity which did not respond to oral medications and botulinum toxin treatment. However, few results have been reported comparing the effects of ITB therapy in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) and acquired brain injury. This study aimed to investigate beneficial and adverse effects of ITB bolus injection and pump therapy in patients with CP and to compare outcomes to patients with acquired brain injury such as traumatic brain injury and hy
This study calculated the incidence of CTS and reappraised the associated risk factors found in previous studies. This information will be helpful for determining the pathophysiology of CTS, and hence aid the establishment of effective new public health policies.
K-DST is an excellent screening tool and is expected to replace K-ASQ with high validity.
This study aimed to systematically assess the informational reliability, quality, and educational suitability of videos introducing scoliosis exercises on TikTok. We retrieved and screened 1904 TikTok videos with the hashtags: "#scoliosis", "#scoliosisexercise", and "#scoliosistips", before collecting a final sample of 171 scoliosis exercises in March 2022. Then, two independent raters assessed the reliability and quality of the videos using the DISCERN instrument and evaluated the educational s
Disease-specific values of pulmonary function, including FVC, MEP, and MIP, can be accurately used to assess the onset of ventilatory insufficiency in patients with ALS, DMD, and MMD.
Most apps provided training for the memory and attention domains, but few apps included executive function or visuospatial domains. The quality of the apps improved significantly when more domains were provided, and was positively associated with the number of reviews received. These results could be useful for the future development of mobile apps for cognitive training.
Abstract Nationwide population-based cohort provides a new opportunity to build a completely automated risk prediction model based on individuals’ history of health and healthcare beyond existing risk prediction models. We tested the possibility of machine learning models to predict future incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using large-scale administrative health data. From the Korean National Health Insurance Service database between 2002 and 2010, we obtained de-identified health data in el
This study aimed to evaluate the reliability, overall quality, and educational value of online videos for learning the techniques related to shoulder injection treatments and analyzing the usability of video evaluation tools for musculoskeletal injections. Online video searches were performed in February 2022 using the terms “shoulder injection”, “glenohumeral joint injection”, “acromioclavicular joint injection”, and “subacromial bursa injection.” Included videos were scored by modified DISCERN
Aging leads to functional decline across multiple organ systems due to physiological, anatomical, and immunological changes. The respiratory system also undergoes various changes due to aging. In this comprehensive review, we focus on the aging respiratory system, categorizing the changes into pulmonary function, structural anatomy, gas exchange, defense mechanisms, immune system alterations, and exercise capacity. Aging significantly affects pulmonary function. Lung development peaks around age
Central nervous system diseases, particularly neurodegenerative disorders, pose significant challenges in medicine. These conditions, characterized by progressive neuronal loss, have remained largely incurable, exacting a heavy toll on individuals and society. In recent years, in vivo reprogramming using Yamanaka factors has emerged as a promising approach for central nervous system regeneration. This technique involves introducing transcription factors, such as Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc, into
This study was performed to review which mHealth apps that improve brace-wearing compliance are currently available, and to carry out their quality assessments by listing their functionalities. We found ten mHealth apps in the literature review and commercial mHealth apps market (Google Play and App store). Then, the quality of these apps was evaluated by their transparency, health content, excellent technical content, security/privacy, issues of usability, and subjective ratings (THESIS) scale,
This study aimed to objectively assess YouTube videos' quality, reliability, and information delivery capability regarding novel spinal muscular atrophy treatments. Using the keywords "nusinersen", "spinraza", "ridisplam", "evrysdi", "onasemnogene abeparvovec", and "zolgensma", we were able to retrieve and screen 360 videos before settling on a final sample of 99 on 25 September 2022. Then, two independent raters used the mDISCERN and GQS instruments to evaluate the videos' reliability and quali
