About the Lab
Professor Hee Chang Ahn's research lab specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery, with a strong focus on innovative microsurgical techniques and tissue engineering applications. The lab investigates advanced flap designs—such as the transverse radial artery flap and DIEP flap—for soft tissue reconstruction in breast, facial, and extremity reconstructions. It also explores the clinical efficacy and safety of novel therapies like low-level light therapy for androgenetic alopecia and vascular reconstruction techniques for chronic hand ischemia. The lab emphasizes minimally invasive, patient-centered approaches that enhance both functional outcomes and cosmetic results.

15INTRODUCTION: Androgenetic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss in both sexes. In recent studies, low-level light therapy (LLLT) has been established as an effective treatment for alopecia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of LLLT using a new helmet-type device for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. METHOD: A randomized, sham device-controlled, double-blind clinical trial was conducted at 2 institutions. Sixty participants diagnosed with androgeneti
BACKGROUND: In an attempt to improve the versatility of the radial forearm flap, a new design was developed: the transverse radial artery forearm flap. METHODS: The transverse radial artery forearm flap is designed elliptically in the distal palmar forearm with the long axis oriented transversely parallel to the wrist. The donor defect is closed by a V-shaped flap, which is elevated as a fasciocutaneous flap based on the ulnar artery by V-Y advancement. This second flap allows defect coverage wi
The hook and wire method allowed precise application of traction forces across zygomatic fractures. The fractured bone fragment could be pulled in the direction precisely opposite to the vector of impact at the time of trauma. Soft tissue damage due to dissection was minimized. In particular, this method was effective in reducing rotated bone fragments and can be an alternative option to using the zygoma elevator.
The modified technique group showed superior results in terms of safety and cosmesis. With our modified C-H flap method, simultaneous breast and nipple reconstruction is safe and has satisfactory results.
Chronic hand ischemia causes cold intolerance, intractable pain, and digital ulceration. If ischemic symptoms persist despite pharmacologic treatments, surgical interventions should be considered. This retrospective study evaluated the long-term results after ulnar and radial reconstruction using an interpositional deep inferior epigastric artery (DIEA) graft combined with periarterial sympathectomy. Patients who underwent this surgery from March 2003 to February 2019 were included. To evaluate
Purpose: The deep inferior epigastric perforator(DIEP) free flap is well known as an ideal donor site for the breast reconstruction. The flap can provide huge amount of fat tissue for breast and buttock contour, while it is also very useful as a thin skin flap to reconstruct the upper and lower extremities. We used a DIEP free flap in various site reconstructions besides the breast and would like to reinsure the usefulness of this flap. Methods: Twenty nine consecutive patients who underwent DIE
Purpose: Low-molecular-weight dextran is one of the most frequently used antithrombotic agents in microvascular surgery, but there is controversy whether it has the real benefit in the clinical aspects or not. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect associated with postoperative use of low-molecula-weight dextran in breast reconstruction by free TRAM flap patients. Methods: From January 2002 to October 2008, we reconstructed 88 cases of postmastectomy deformity using the free TRAM fl
The incidence of the tuberculosis infection has decreased worldwide, but it is still easy to find the patients in some areas or some races. And it is very difficult to diagnose and treat the patients who are infected by the atypical tuberculosis. Facial skin infection by atypical tuberculosis has not been reported. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman who developed facial skin and soft tissue necrosis caused by Mycobacterium abscessus after receiving liquid silicone injections and face lift
With the advancement of free-flap techniques, the classic flaps have become less popular. Our new design supplements the PMMC flap by providing a thin pliable flap with a long pedicle and rotation arc, allowing a combination of different types of flaps to cover composite head and neck defects, especially in cases that lack a reliable recipient vessel due to radiation.
Purpose: There are many articles describing about Guyon canal compression syndrome. Until recently, most of these articles have been presented about the symptoms of ulnar nerve compression, but there have been no reports about ulnar artery compression. In this article, besides the nerve compression symptoms in the Guyon's canal, we represented the symptoms and treatments based on the ulnar artery obstruction. Methods: Guyon canal is composed of the hamate and pisiform, and the ligaments which co
Background: Variable methods have been introduced for reduction of the zygomatic fractures. The Dingman elevator is used widely to reduce these fractures but is inappropriate in certain types of fractures which require atypical traction vectors. We introduce and examine an alternate method of reducing zygomatic fractures using wire and hook traction. Methods: A retrospective study was performed for all zygomatic fracture patients admitted between 2008 and 2014. Medially rotated fractures were re
