About the Lab
Professor Heejoon Whang's research lab focuses on the design and evaluation of built environments that support human development and well-being, with a particular emphasis on children, elderly populations, and educational institutions. The lab investigates how physical spaces—such as children's libraries, school campuses, national rental housing for the elderly, and urban entertainment centers—can be strategically designed to enhance safety, social interaction, and quality of life through evidence-based approaches like CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). Research directions include spatial behavior analysis, environmental psychology, and the integration of architectural education with practical design studio models.

15The purpose of this study is to suggest the physical spaces of a children's library in an effort to support children's development in a more positive manner, because the physical spaces of a children's library are likely to effect their development. We reviewed theories of children's developmental characteristics, and made list of behavior backing up children's development in 4 sections. And then the behavior observation was used as research method and the results of this research were expressed
This study proposes to investigate compositional elements for effectively organizing and operating architectural design studios in a unified manner with other supplementary courses in history and theory, media, and technical studies. Three basic and preliminary elements necessary for steadily improving students’ design ability throughout a series of university education are examined in detail. They are (1)year-based order of study objectives and project contents in consecutive academic years, (2
Recently, Seoul City Authority has a plan to distribute national rental housing by SH Corporation to reflect the preferences for the apartments and to solve the budget problems of the elderly. Its because the elderly recently show their interests in national rental housing as a alternative space for independent life and in the design of the housing types. Especially in Seoul, the national rental housing for the elderly has been designed not only to live alone by themselves but also to get along
Since the late 20th century, people began to be interested in the mental consumption activities as the objects of consumption spread from materials to time and space. In particular, U.E.C (Urban Entertainment Center) which has emerged as cultural and commercial complex space for leisure culture life in this consumption-oriented capitalism society is integrating diverse facilities and complex functions. Here, thematic and entertainment elements are introduced to implement a commercial environment
The purpose of this research is to understand the basic correlation between CPTED based 'Safe School Guidelines' and the physical properties of Korean elementary schools. Fundamentally, the guidelines are consisted with phrases that contain a detailed explanation of how the spaces within the school campuses should be and which aspects have to be avoided. Furthermore, the guidelines categorized among the several areas in school are grouped by CPTED elements such as 'Natural Surveillance', 'Territ
This study analyzes the common space of the high schools before and after the decade of 2009 which starts Subject-centered clusters school plan, and proposes the direction of common space planning for the future. Based on the floor plans of high schools awarded as excellent school facilities every year, first, types and numbers of common space, second, area ratio between common space and program space and also moving space and staying space, third, space connections were analyzed for tracking th
The purpose of this study is to investigate the frequency in the use of children’s playground, to determine the most preferable playground and analyze the environmental factors which effect the children’s preference of the playground. In addition, this study suggests proper location of children’s playground facilities in multi-family housing. Survey area included 12 apartment complex in the Dongtan new town in Gyeonggi-do Hwaseong-si. The results lead to the two following conclusions. 1) The pla
In this research, the changes of spaces on Namsan-Park and of the meaning of the park from the late 1900s through the early 1908s are analyzed, and the results are provided as follows. To begin with, inserting a concept of park to Namsan provided people with limitation in understanding definition of park, which indicated finite and constrained space, so that it distracted people from using spaces on Namsan. At that time, since the park was considered as one of key factors to establish Modern cit
Every matter on Earth live within the effects of Earth's gravity. Therefore overcoming the force of gravity means denying a primitive power that humans beings don't even notice and eventually, reaching a point where human beings feel sense of pleasure by doing so. gave side effects, such as lack of meaning and logic in the modern architecture. The recent architectural structures imply not only the emphasis of their structural beauty but also of their constructive complexity within their creative
The Netherlands is a human-made country and an extremely well-designed European country as well. Thegeneral Dutch spatial planning for the city and environment takes place at a regional level. The local communitydetermines the primary development conditions, and the prospect is included in a legally binding land-use plan. Especially, Rotterdam is a representative port city as the center of world trade and the gateway to western Europe. According to the history of war, the city reconstruction and
This investigation, based on empirical research, examined the role of complexity and order in the aesthetic experience of architectural forms. The basic assumption of this study was that perception in architectural form is a process of interpreting a pattern in a reductive way. Thus, perceptual arousal is not determined by the absolute complexity of a configuration. Rather, the actual perceived complexity is a function of the organization of the system (order). In addition, complexity and order w
Urban area of the metropolis like 'Seoul' is demanding the space which can accommodate multiple applications to meet a wide range of supply and demand. The buildings are developed as vertical form focusing on three-dimensional and mixed-use. The value of three-dimensional and mixed-use building is formed by the relationship and linkage system of the site where the building is located. In this aspect, buildings in urban area contain 'Pilotis' which is a space constructed only by pillars without r
The Educational facilities is accomplishing the role as the community facilities through various programs that the culture·leisure·long-life education facilities etc. But The local residents do not use that facilities which is opened in the community actually well. Because it does not consider the various things that convenient for resident users who is not student. With sameness, School library which is opened to local community can not expect as a Public library with modern library services. T
