About the Lab

Professor Heesu Park's research lab focuses on critical care medicine and translational biomedical research, with a strong emphasis on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying hematological malignancies, sepsis, and post-cardiac arrest brain injury. The lab investigates cellular and molecular markers such as telomere length, telomerase activity, kallistatin, and mitochondrial formyl peptides to identify prognostic indicators and therapeutic targets. Current research directions include improving outcomes in acute conditions like myelodysplastic syndromes, septic shock, and cardiac arrest through innovative interventions such as remote-controlled CPR devices and modulation of oxidative stress and immune dysfunction. The lab integrates preclinical models with clinical studies to bridge laboratory findings to patient care.

Dysregulation of Telomere Lengths and Telomerase Activity in Myelodysplastic Syndrome
박희수, 최정은, Cha-Ja See, 김정아, 박시내, 임경옥, 김성민, 이동순, 황상미

Background: Telomere shortening is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of myeloid malignancies, but telomere lengths (TL) during interphase and metaphase in hematopoietic malignancies have not been analyzed. We aimed to assess the TLs of interphase and metaphase cells of MDS and telomerase activity (TA) and to find out prognostic significances of TL and TA. Methods: The prognostic significance of TA by quantitative PCR and TL by quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization (QFISH) o

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract The purpose of study was to evaluate that kallistatin deficiency causes excessive production of reactive oxygen species and exacerbates neuronal injury after cardiac arrest. For in vitro study, kallistatin knockdown human neuronal cells were given ischemia–reperfusion injury, and the oxidative stress and apoptosis were evaluated. For clinical study, cardiac arrest survivors admitted to the ICU were divided into the good (CPC 1–2) and poor (CPC 3–5) 6-month neurological outcome groups. T

Effect of emergency physician-operated emergency short-stay ward on emergency department stay length and clinical outcomes: a case-control study

SJR Q1BMC Emergency MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that an emergency short-stay ward (ESSW) mainly operated by emergency medicine physicians may reduce the length of patient stay in emergency department without expense of clinical outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed adult patients who visited the emergency department of the study hospital and were subsequently admitted to wards from 2017 to 2019. We divided study participants into three groups: patients admitted to ESSW and treated by the department of emer

SJR Q1Journal of Leukocyte BiologyOA

During recovery from septic shock, circulating mitochondrial N-formyl peptides predispose to secondary infection by occupying formyl peptide receptor 1 on the neutrophil (polymorphonuclear leukocyte) membrane, suppressing cytosolic calcium ([Ca2+]i)-dependent responses to secondarily encountered bacteria. However, no study has yet investigated therapeutic clearance of circulating mitochondrial N-formyl peptides in clinical settings. Thus, we studied how to remove mitochondrial N-formyl peptides

BACKGROUND: Recently, we developed a chest compression device that can move the chest compression position without interruption during CPR and be remotely controlled to minimize rescuer exposure to infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to compare its performance with conventional mechanical CPR device in a mannequin and a swine model of cardiac arrest. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prototype of a remote-controlled automatic chest compression device (ROSCER) that can change the chest comp

ABSTRACT: Objective: This study aimed to test whether the prognostic value of tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase 1 (WARS1) for 28-day mortality in patients with sepsis was affected by monocytopenia. Methods: A prospective analysis of retrospectively collected samples from 74 sepsis patients was performed. WARS1, C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin were measured at admission and 24 and 72 h after admission. The prognostic value of WARS1, CRP, and procalcitonin for 28-day mortality was compared

Wavepacket Correlation Function Approach for Nonadiabatic Reactions: Quasi-Jahn-Teller Model

Time-dependent formulations of the reactive scattering theory based on the wavepacket correlation functions with the Møller wavepackets for the electronically nonadiabatic reactions are presented. The calculations of state-to-state reactive probabilities for the quasi-Jahn-Teller scattering model system were performed. The conical intersection (CI) effects are investigated by comparing the results of the two-surface nonadiabatic calculations and the single surface adiabatic approximation. It was

This paper aims to find out which term was the official title of Joseon missions to Imperial China, and whether the widespread term yeonhangsa(燕行使), which is much more frequently used in Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan after Fuma Susumu’s book is published, is a suitable to cover whole Joseon Missions to Ming and Qing dynasty. To clarify that, we investigated the government official records such as Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty and Journal of the Royal Secretariat. Our research finding

12093 Background: The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) defines distress as an unpleasant, multidimensional experience that may interfere with patient behavior, emotions, and ability to cope with illness. Distress screening is a critical aspect of comprehensive cancer treatment, but the relationship between patient-reported distress and healthcare utilization remains unclear. We assessed this relationship in patients with advanced cancers historically associated with high utilization,
