15In this study finite element model of the human lumbar spinal segments (L2-L5) was developed to parametrically examine the stiffnessof a dynamic stabilization device and its influence on the mobility of adjacent intervertebral segments. Five models were analyzedand compared: (1) a lumbar spine with intact discs, a reference; (2) a fused spine with a fixation device following interbody fusionand total laminectomy; (3) a spine stabilized with a dynamic stabilization device following total laminect
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the biomechanicalbehavior of the lumbar spine after posterior decompression with the spinous process osteotomy (SPiO) technique or the conventional laminectomy (CL) techniqueusing a finite element (FE) model. Materials and Methods: Three validated lumbar FE models (L2‒5) which represented intact spine and two decompression models using SPiO and CL techniques at the L3‒4 segment were developed. In each model, the ranges of motion, the
In this paper, we present a new validation method for subject-specific finite element (FE) modeling of the knee joint based on in vivo computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Previously, several FE models have been developed for estimating the mechanical response of joint structures, where direct or indirect in vivo measurement is difficult or impossible. More recently, studies using MRI have provided clear visualization of the motion and deformation of the articular
Fretting corrosion is studied to understand its influence on the structural integrity of osteosynthesis implants between contact areas of artificial joints. With the artificial knee joints becoming more important comes a growing concern that the friction corrosion at the interface of an artificial knee joint may cause the shortening of its life. This paper aims to analyze the wear phenomenon following the material characteristics on the structural integrity of osteosynthesis implants between the
Joint kinematics and contact mechanics dictate the success of current total knee replacement (TKR) devices. Computational contact prediction is a feasible way of evaluating new TKR designs prior to physical testing and implementation. Previous finite element (FE)knee models have generally been used to predict stresses on contact areas and/or areas subjected to static or quasi-static loading. Explicit dynamic FE analyses have recently been used to effectively predict TKR kinematics and contact me
A high specific strength and specific stiffness are essential in high-performance bicycle wheel design. However, it is challenging fortraditional materials to satisfy these trends, although advanced composite materials can be selected to simultaneously satisfy thoserequirements. This paper presents ply stacking sequence optimization for a composite bicycle wheel subjected to standard loadingcases. In the design of a high performance composite bicycle wheel, the stacking sequence of composite pli
In this study, we design a reconfigurable frequency selective surface (FSS) using fluidic channels to use the FSS in multi-frequencies. Effective permittivity can be changed using water as the fluid of fluidic channels in a dielectric slab, and the frequency characteristics of FSS can be controlled. We optimize the dimensions of the fluidic channel to design a reconfigurable FSS and measure its transmission characteristics.
In this study, we propose a multi-layered reconfigurable frequency selective surface (FSS) using water channels, which can be switched between the bandpass and bandstop states. Variation ratio in transmission between the bandpass and bandstop states is drastically improved by multi-layer dielectric slabs with water channels. We then fabricate the design, and the measured results in the X-band shows a good agreement with the simulation. The variation in transmission coefficients between the two s
A ceramic articulating system in total hip replacement thought to be superior to metal-on-polyethylene due to its extremely low coefficient of friction and potential for high resistance to wear. In the current study, nine different models of ceramic ball heads were mechanically evaluated using 3D finite element(FE) analyses. It was found that the maximum stress in al
