About the Lab
Professor Hong-jo Choi's research lab specializes in tuberculosis (TB) epidemiology, social determinants of health, and precision public health interventions. The lab focuses on understanding the societal, behavioral, and biological factors influencing TB outcomes, with particular emphasis on multidrug-resistant TB, asymptomatic TB, and long-term consequences for survivors. Using large-scale national health databases and advanced genomic tools like whole-genome sequencing, the lab integrates epidemiological, clinical, and molecular approaches to inform evidence-based TB control policies in South Korea and beyond.

14한국은 OECD국가 중 결핵 발생률, 사망률, 다제내성결핵발생률이 1위인 만큼 결핵으로 인한 질병부담이 상당한 국가이다. 하지만, 결핵의 사회적 결정요인을 탐구하기 위한 관심은 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구는 첫째, 2000년 이후 국제적으로 결핵의 사회적 결정요인에 대한 실증 연구들의 현황을파악하고 그 성과를 확인하고자 한다. 둘째, 1990년대 이후 한국의 결핵 연구 동향을 살펴보고, 사회적 결정요인과 관련한 국제적 연구 흐름에 비추어 어떠한 유사점과 차이점이 있는지 확인하고자 한다. 마지막으로 이러한 검토 결과에 기초하여, 근거기반 결핵 정책 개발을 위해 한국의 결핵연구가더욱 관심을 기울여야 할 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 결핵의 기여인자에 대한 기존 문헌의 유형표를 수정하여 사용한다. 수정된 유형표에따라 체계적 문헌고찰을 진행하며, 검색어로 제목에 ‘tuberculosis’, 주제어에 ‘social determinant’가포함된 국외문헌들과, ‘tuberculosis’
