About the Lab
Professor Hoon Park's research lab focuses on molecular and translational studies in medical microbiology, with a strong emphasis on cellular responses to environmental stressors such as sulfite and zinc deficiency. The lab investigates gene regulation and metabolic adaptation in *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*, particularly the role of plasma membrane proteins and transcriptional regulators in detoxification pathways. Additionally, the lab explores clinical applications of micronutrient supplementation—especially zinc— in dermatological conditions like alopecia areata, and examines gait biomechanics using wearable sensor technology for clinical assessment. These diverse research directions converge on understanding molecular mechanisms underlying human disease and developing targeted therapeutic interventions.

15Ssu1p, a plasma membrane protein involved in sulphite metabolism in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was found to be required for efficient sulphite efflux. An SSU1 null mutant accumulated significantly more sulphite than wild-type, whereas cells expressing multicopy SSU1 accumulated significantly less. Cells expressing FZF1-4, a dominant allele of a transcriptional activator of SSU1 that confers sulphite resistance, also accumulated less sulphite. beta-galactosidase activity in the FZF1-4 strain carry
BACKGROUND: It has been reported that some alopecia areata patients have zinc deficiency. There have also been several reports published concerning oral zinc sulfate therapy, with encouraging results, in some alopecia areata patients. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of oral zinc supplementation for twelve weeks in alopecia areata patients who had a low serum zinc level. METHODS: Oral zinc gluconate (50 mg/T/day) supplementation was given to alopecia a
Sulfite is a commonly used preservative in foods, beverages, and Pharmaceuticals because it is toxic to many microorganisms. In order to understand the global response of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to sulfite, genome-wide transcript profiling following sulfite exposure was obtained. The transcription levels of 21 genes were increased more than 2-fold, while those of 37 genes decreased to a similar extent. Genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism represented the highest proportion of induced genes
Aquagenic urticaria is a rare form of physical urticaria, in which contact with water evokes wheals. A 19-year-old man and a 4-year-old boy complained of recurrent episodes of urticaria. Urticaria appeared while taking a bath or a shower, in the rain, or in a swimming pool. Well-defined pin head to small pea-sized wheals surrounded by variable sized erythema were provoked by contact with water on the face, neck, and trunk, regardless of its temperature or source. Results from a physical examinat
Inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based gait analysis can be used to quantitatively analyze the bilateral coordination and gait asymmetry (GA). The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in bilateral coordination and GA due to gait speed using an IMU based gait analysis and identify spatiotemporal factors affecting bilateral coordination and GA. Eighty healthy adults (40 men and 40 women) participated in the study. The mean age was 26.2 years, and the mean body mass index was 22.8 kg/m2.
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of angular deformity correction by percutaneous hemiepiphysiodesis using transphyseal screw (PETS) or tension-band plating (TBP) in growing children with idiopathic genu valgum with emphasis on the rate of deformity correction. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed cases of hemiepiphysiodesis for angular deformity in lower extremities between 2009 and 2014. A total of 90 limbs in 33 patients received PETS and 60 limbs in 24 patients re
Open reduction alone can be an attractive surgical option in select patients with missed Monteggia fracture with minimal bowing of the distal ulna. However, ulnar osteotomy should be considered in patients with a definite ulnar deformity.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of levodopa on the phase coordination index (PCI) and gait asymmetry (GA) of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and to investigate correlations between the severity of motor symptoms and gait parameters measured using an inertial sensor. Twenty-six patients with mild-to-moderate-stage PD who were taking levodopa participated in this study. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS III) was used to assess the severity of motor impairm
AN associated with radiographic parameters felt to be representative of a flat foot; however, the degree of flat foot was not associated with the development and severity of symptoms in patients with AN.
BACKGROUND: This study investigated the efficacy of osteosynthesis in situ by evaluating the functional and cosmetic results in children with nonunion of lateral condyle fractures. METHODS: Sixteen consecutive patients were treated with in situ fixation consisting of minimal curettage of fracture gap and screw compression of metaphyseal fragments without bone grafting. The mean age at the time of surgery was 5.6 years (range, 1 to 10 y). The mean interval between the initial lateral condylar fra
