About the Lab
Professor Hoon Pyo Hong's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research, particularly in the areas of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury, intestinal barrier dysfunction, and inflammatory responses in critical illness. The lab investigates the protective effects of natural compounds—such as Korean red ginseng and bovine colostrum—on organ injury and systemic inflammation. It also explores biomarkers like C-reactive protein for predicting outcomes in acute conditions, especially among elderly and critically ill patients. The lab integrates preclinical animal models with clinical observational studies to bridge basic science and clinical application.

Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO) for two hours. They were fed KRG extract (100 mg/kg/day per orally) or saline after reperfusion. Tests for neurological deficits, using the modified neurologic severity score and the corner turn test, were performed befo
This study evaluated whether or not bovine colostrum (BC) is able to treat or prevent intestinal barrier damage, bacterial translocation, and the related systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in an intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-injured rat model. Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The rats' intestinal I/R injuries were induced by clamping the superior mesenteric artery for 30 minutes. After 3 hours of reperfusion and then twice da
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the potential of C-reactive protein (CRP) as a predictor of death within 14 days in acutely symptomatic patients with advanced cancer admitted to the emergency department (ED). METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted of 126 consecutive patients with advanced cancer who were admitted to the ED because of acute symptoms. The patients were categorized into two groups according to serum CRP levels (cutoff 9.2 mg/dL). Demographic characteri
Background: Social changes related to the elderly in regard to factors such as population, region, cohabitant status and depression incidence, have recently been observed. The aim of our study was to investigate the characteristics of elderly suicide attempters according to these changes. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of suicide attempters who visited an Emergency Department between January 2013 and March 2016. Patients were classified into an elderly or non-elderly gr
A higher incidence of femoral intertrochanteric fractures from minor falls was found among middle-old to oldest-old patients compared to that in young-old patients. Therefore, physicians should perform more thorough physical examinations and radiograph reading in middle-old to oldest-old patients even if the patients do not complain of pain.
Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma that usually occurs in deep soft tissues, especially those of the proximal extremities and limb girdles, but is rare in children. We present an unusual case of a tumor arising in the perineum and involving the bulbous urethra in a 21-month-old boy. The patient was treated with surgical excision and urethroplasty followed by combination chemotherapy.
There are only three species of poisonous snakes in Korea. Deaths from poisonous snakebites are rare in Korea, but the World Health Organization estimates that as many as 30,000 to 40,000 death occur following venomous snakebites. The most important factor for determining a prognosis for a victim of a venomous snakebite is the grade of envenomation, because the grade of envenomation is highly correlated with severe complications such as disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, a bleeding tendenc
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the associations between paraspinal muscle measurements on chest computed tomography and clinical outcomes of elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS: This single-center, retrospective, observational study analyzed elderly patients (≥65 years) with CAP hospitalized through an emergency department between March 2020 and December 2022. We collected their baseline characteristics and laboratory data at the time of admission. The paraspina
Background: The population of individuals classified as oldest-old (aged ≥85 years) has increased rapidly in recent years. The rates of morbidity from chronic diseases and physical dependence tend to be higher in the oldest-old compared with individuals classified as young-to-middle-old (aged 65-84 years). Therefore, the classification and evaluation of traumatic injuries in the oldest-old group are necessary. Herein we focused on the risk of traumatic intracranial hemorrhage from low-energy fal
