About the Lab

Professor Hoon Young Choi's research lab focuses on renal pathophysiology, with a central emphasis on mesenchymal stem cell-derived microparticles and their regenerative potential in acute and chronic kidney injury. The lab investigates mechanisms of endothelial protection, tubulointerstitial fibrosis, and peritoneal membrane integrity in dialysis patients, particularly in the context of ischemia-reperfusion injury, salt sensitivity, and electrolyte imbalances. Key research directions include the role of extracellular vesicles in modulating endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT), improving peritoneal dialysis outcomes, and addressing systemic complications such as hyperkalemia and endothelial dysfunction in end-stage renal disease.
