About the Lab

Professor Hugo Rodrigues' research lab specializes in the development of advanced smart materials and soft robotic systems, with a focus on shape memory alloys (SMA), pneumatic artificial muscles, and soft composite actuators. The lab explores innovative actuator designs—such as origami-based, torsionally prestrained, and origami-vacuum actuated systems—that enable high force output, large deformations, and efficient energy use in both rigid and soft robotic applications. Key research directions include the integration of SMA elements into functional structures, novel manufacturing techniques for non-linear actuator geometries, and the design of hybrid pneumatic systems for enhanced performance. The lab’s work aims to push the boundaries of soft robotics by enabling lightweight, high-performance, and controllable robotic systems for diverse engineering and biomedical applications.

An Overview of Shape Memory Alloy-Coupled Actuators and Robots
Hugo Rodrigue, Wei Wang, Min-Woo Han, Thomas J. Y. Kim, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Soft Robotics

The one-dimensional deformation of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires and springs can be implemented into different types of functional structures with three-dimensional deformations. These structures can be classified based on the type of structure and how the SMA element has been implemented into the following categories: rigid mechanical joints, semi-rigid flexural hinges, SMA elements externally attached to a soft structure, and embedded into the soft structure. These structures have a wide rang

Long Shape Memory Alloy Tendon-based Soft Robotic Actuators and Implementation as a Soft Gripper
Jihyeong Lee, Yoon Seop Chung, Hugo Rodrigue
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Shape memory alloy (SMA) wire-based soft actuators have had their performance limited by the small stroke of the SMA wire embedded within the polymeric matrix. This intrinsically links the bending angle and bending force in a way that made SMA-based soft grippers have relatively poor performance versus other types of soft actuators. In this work, the use of free-sliding SMA wires as tendons for soft actuation is presented that enables large increases in the bending angle and bending force of the

Origami-Based Vacuum Pneumatic Artificial Muscles with Large Contraction Ratios
Jin‐Gyu Lee, Hugo Rodrigue
SJR Q1Soft Robotics

A novel linear actuator called origami-based vacuum pneumatic artificial muscle (OV-PAM) is proposed in this study that can produce large forces (>400 N) with a contraction ratio >90% of the active length of the actuator. Moreover, some of the designs presented in this article can lift large loads with large contraction ratios at extremely low vacuum pressure (≈10 kPa). This actuator consists of a sealed origami film chamber connecting a polygonal top and bottom plate with evenly spaced transver

SMA-based smart soft composite structure capable of multiple modes of actuation
Hugo Rodrigue, Wei Wang, Binayak Bhandari, Min‐Woo Han, Sung-Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Composites Part B EngineeringOA

This paper introduces the design of a smart soft composite (SSC) actuator capable of multiple modes of actuation. This actuator combines four shape memory alloy (SMA) wires embedded in a soft matrix where one or two SMA wires can be activated to induce the actuator into either the bending mode, the twisting mode or the combined bending and twisting mode of actuation. Experimental results for actuators of different lengths were obtained for all modes of actuation and the actuator is capable of la

Fabrication of wrist-like SMA-based actuator by double smart soft composite casting
Hugo Rodrigue, Wei Wang, Binayak Bhandari, Sung‐Hoon Ahn
SJR Q1Smart Materials and Structures

A new manufacturing method for smart soft composite (SSC) actuators that consists of double casting a SSC actuator to produce an actuator with non-linear shape memory alloy (SMA) wire positioning is proposed. This method is used to manufacture a tube-shaped SSC actuator in which the SMA wires follow the curvature of the tube and is capable of pure-twisting deformations while sustaining a cantilever load. The concept is tested by measuring the maximum twisting angle and a simple control method is

Jumping Tensegrity Robot Based on Torsionally Prestrained SMA Springs
Yoon Seop Chung, Jihyeong Lee, Jae Hyuck Jang, Hyouk Ryeol Choi, Hugo Rodrigue
SJR Q1ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces

This paper introduces the addition of torsional prestrain into the manufacturing process of shape memory alloy (SMA) springs to form torsionally prestrained SMA springs. These springs have a better performance at the same power input for the same loads and same coil dimensions as regular SMA springs. A modified thermoconstitutive model was presented that can predict the behavior of the actuator based on the amount of torsional prestrain added into the manufacturing process, and a simple two-stat

SJR Q1Advanced Materials Technologies

Abstract The performance of soft linear actuators will determine the capabilities of future soft robots, and any actuator that can produce larger deformations and forces with a low weight and using lower pressures could potentially become ubiquitous in the field. In this work, the design of paired pouch motors that can produce a maximum contraction ratio of 41.9% and of 31% with a 10 kg payload is presented. The design of higher‐order pairings of pouch motors is demonstrated to produce even larg

A Novel Soft Bending Actuator Using Combined Positive and Negative Pressures
Mohammad Fatahillah, Namsoo Oh, Hugo Rodrigue
SJR Q1Frontiers in Bioengineering and BiotechnologyOA

Most soft pneumatic actuators for producing bending actuation have made use of either positive or negative pressure and adjusted their design in consequence. In the proposed paper, a novel soft bending actuator using combined positive and negative pressures (PNP) where the bending force of a negative pressure actuator and a positive pressure actuator is combined into a single actuating structure. This actuator is capable of producing a blocked force as high as 150 N at a combined positive pressu

This report introduces the design of the actuator, the manufacturing method, and experimental results for the twisting angle and twisting force when varying the dimensions of the matrix of the actuator.
