About the Lab
Professor Hwang Jin-Hyeok's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal oncology and molecular pathology, with a primary emphasis on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and cholangiocarcinoma (biliary tract cancer). The lab investigates molecular biomarkers—such as miR-21, CD24, S100A4, and PD-L1—that predict disease progression, treatment response, and prognosis. It also explores inflammatory mediators like IL-6 and IL-8, and the role of immune checkpoint inhibitors in advanced biliary tract cancers. 15Low miR-21 expression was associated with benefit from adjuvant treatment in two independent cohorts of PDAC cases, and anti-miR-21 increased anticancer drug activity in vitro. These data provide evidence that miR-21 may allow stratification for adjuvant therapy, and represents a new potential target for therapy in PDAC.
Among 67 cases of AIP, either IgG or IgG4 was elevated in 76% of patients, and 14 patients (21%) had other organ involvement. New Korean diagnostic criteria are useful for diagnosis of AIP.
The expression of markers of EMT and metastasis in PDACs was significantly associated with pathologic features of aggressiveness. CD24 and S100A4 expressions were significant predictors of poor survival; thus, immunohistochemistry for these markers in resected specimens may help to identify PDAC patients with a poor prognosis.
