About the Lab

Professor Hye-Jin Jeon's research lab focuses on metabolic and cardiovascular health in the Korean population, with a strong emphasis on the interplay between visceral adiposity, metabolic syndrome, and related chronic diseases. The lab investigates biomarkers and imaging indicators—such as epicardial fat, ascending aortic diameter, and serum γ-glutamyltransferase—as predictors of prehypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk. A key research direction involves understanding the impact of lifestyle factors, including diet (e.g., resistant starch in brown rice) and oral health (e.g., chewing problems), on metabolic and mental health outcomes in adults and the elderly. The lab employs large-scale cohort studies and low-dose CT imaging to explore early indicators of metabolic and cardiovascular disease.

Association of Serum γ-Glutamyltransferase Level and Incident Prehypertension in Korean Men
Hyejin Chun, Sung Keun Park, Jae‐Hong Ryoo
SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

Several lines of evidence indicate that prehypertension is more atherogenic than normal blood pressure. Serum γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is known to be positively associated with prehypertensive status and the progression of hypertension. However, there have been no prospective studies of serum GGT level as a predictor of prehypertension. Apparently 13,435 healthy men (mean age 42.0 ± 6.6 yr) with normal blood pressure were included in a prospective cohort study in 2005 and were followed up to

SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Rice is a major source of carbohydrates. Resistant starch (RS) is digested in the human small intestine but fermented in the large intestine. This study investigated the effect of consuming heat-treated and powdered brown rice cultivars ‘Dodamssal’ (HBD) and ‘Ilmi’ (HBI), with relatively high and less than 1% RS content, respectively, on the regulation of glucose metabolism in humans. Clinical trial meals were prepared by adding ~80% HBI or HBD powder to HBI and HBD meals, respectively. There wa
