About the Lab
Professor Hye-won Choi's research lab specializes in theoretical and computational linguistics, with a primary focus on syntactic structure, word order variation, and the interface between syntax, semantics, and information structure in Korean. The lab investigates fundamental principles of sentence formation, particularly in dative-accusative constructions, using corpus-based and formal approaches to explore factors such as argument length, givenness, focus, and grammatical weight. Recent work also extends into algorithmic optimization for automata theory, particularly parallelizing NFA-to-DFA conversion for applications in text processing and bioinformatics.

15This paper examines the word order alternation in the dative-accusative construction in Korean. Using a million word corpus (Spoken portion of Sejong Balanced Modern Korean Corpus, Kim 2000), it shows that the length of arguments is a major factor that affects the syntactic alternation, while admitting that other factors than length are involved in order phenomena. Moreover, it quantitatively testifies to the “long before short” preference of the Korean word order.
This paper examines the word order alternation between dative (-eykey/hanthey) and accusative (-ul/lul) arguments in Korean with focus on the informational structure effect (i.e., effect of discourse givenness or newness), as compared to the grammatical weight or length effect reported in Choi (2007). This corpus study verifies that given information comes before new information in Korean as in many other languages, by showing that the 'given before new (GN)' order is much more preferred (5 time
We discuss ways to effectively parallelize the subset construction algorithm, which is used to convert non-deterministic finite automata (NFAs) to deterministic finite automata (DFAs). This conversion is at the heart of string pattern matching based on regular expressions and thus has many applications in text processing, compilers, scripting languages and web browsers, security and more recently also with DNA sequence analysis. We discuss sources of parallelism in the sequential algorithm and t
The distinction of argument and adjunct has been an important notion in linguistic theories, especially at the interface of syntax and semantics, and this distinction has been believed to be binary and categorical. However, there are some gray-area cases such as instruments and participant locations, for which the distinction does not appear to be so clear. In this paper, I will explore whether the argument/adjunct distinction is categorical by examining the controversial cases, particularly the i
Choi, Hye-Won. 2004. Focus and Specificity in Wh-Scrambling: An OT Account. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 29-2, 137-166. This paper examines scrambling of wh-phrases in Korean and accounts for the presence and lack of specificity and focus effects in scrambling by means of constraint ranking in Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993). It will be argued that scrambling is motivated not only syntactically but also semantically and pragmatically (Choi 1996, 1999), so that depending on the ra
This paper investigates ordering alternation phenomena in Korean using the dative construction data from Sejong Corpus of Modern Korean (Kim, 2000). The paper first shows that syntactic weight and information structure are distinct and independent factors that influence word order in Korean. Moreover, it reveals that heaviness and givenness compete each other and exert diverging effects on word order, which contrasts the converging effects of these factors shown in word orders of right-branching
Building up on Choi's (2011) research that identifies the features of the instrument-taking predicates that influence the presence of instrument with-PPs, the current study explores to analyze the BYU-BNC corpus data of instrument with-PPs with a linear regression model. By building a multiple linear regression model which can deal with identified predictor variables simultaneously, this paper tries to explain the frequencies of instrument with-PPs and their nature of argumenthood by combination
I investigate in this paper how instrument with-PPs in English are licensed given that they are not syntactically obligatory. It is examined whether the presence of instrument PPs is constrained by the predicates (which will verify the argumenthood of instrument) and if so, what properties of the predicates license their presence. More specifically, it is tested whether the presence of instruments is influenced by such semantic, morphological, and syntactic properties of the predicates as semant
The purpose of this study is the image of clothing according to the change of the dots' size was analyzed and its influence on the formation of the image of polka dots clothing was investigated. White waterdrop patterns were designed on the 12 kinds of black texture using Photoshop and CAD program in regular arrangement of diamond figure, composed of white waterdrop(0.5cm, 1.0cm, 1.5cm and 2cm in diameter) and interval(diameter : interval-1 : 1, 1 : 2, 1 : 4). Applying above specification, the p
This study examined cultural differences in the act of sharing positive events with others, called capitalization attempts. The first three studies tested whether the frequency of capitalization attempts differs between cultures using various methods: Self-reports (Study 1), children’s storybooks (Study 2), and Facebook (Study 3). With the exception of Study 2, we found that East Asians are less likely to share their positive events with others than European Americans. Study 4 further examined t
This paper proposes an informational approach to the dative alternation in English following up on the Stochastic Optimality Theoretic (OT) model by Bresnan and Nikitina (2003). While Bresnan and Nikitina’s stochastic OT model resolves the crucial problem of ‘gradience’ unavoidably implicated in variation phenomena by applying the notion of probability to linguistic problems, it fails to account for the details of the unusually alternating examples, which normally would not alternate. More impor
Choi, Hye-Won. 2010. Analyzing and Predicting Ordering Choices in Korean with a Logistic Regression Model. Korean Journal of Linguistics 35-1. 265-289. This paper examines word order alternation in dative construction of Korean and proposes a statistical model of logistic regression based on the analysis of corpus data from Sejong Corpus of Modern Korean (Kim 2000). The model is designed to predict whether each sentence is ordered 'dative before accusative' (DA) or 'accusative before dative' (AD
Choi, Hye-Won. Capturing Lexical Variance with a Mixed Model: Verb in Ordering Variation. 2010. Discourse and Cognition 17.1, 113-137. Based on the dative data collected from Sejong Corpus (Kim 2000), Choi (2010) has analyzed the word order variation and proposed a statistical model of logistic regression that identifies all predictive variables that influence word order and predicts which order (between 'dative before accusative' (DA) and 'accusative before dative' (AD)) is more likely to occur
This study analyzes the use of quotations in news reports with a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, examining reports by The Korea Herald and The New York Times on the Sewol ferry capsize of April 2014 in South Korea. It investigates whether a newspaper’s national basis influences its reporting attitude in the coverage of a non-nationalistic accident of human tragedy such as the Sewol ferry capsize that implicates no explicit conflict of national interest. Through quantitative and quali
