About the Lab
Professor Hye-won Ryu’s research lab specializes in eighteenth-century British literature, gender studies, and the material culture of the long eighteenth century, with a particular focus on corporeality, disguise, and spatiality in autobiographical and fictional narratives. The lab explores how identity, mobility, and power are negotiated through dress, performance, and the built environment in literary and cultural texts. It also investigates the pedagogical design of global history education, emphasizing transcontinental networks and material exchange in shaping world historical consciousness.

5This paper addresses the craft of disguise and spatial mobility through the reading of two eighteenth-century autobiographies. The Life and Adventures of Hannah Snell (1750) deals with the life story of a woman who dons male garb and joins the Royal Marine. A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Charlotte Charke (1755) features an actress and author notorious for cross-dressing both on and off the stage. Broadside ballads that deal with narratives of cross-dressing began to be printed at the end of the
The Woman of Colour, published anonymously in 1808, introduces Olivia Fairfield, a virtuous, attractive, and intelligent mulatto heiress whose journey to England to marry her cousin explores the reconfiguration of British imperial identity. While many scholarly analyses of the novel emphasize the theme of emancipation and the representation of Olivia as a mulatto, it is important to note that the novel’s anti-slavery sentiment is not automatically guaranteed by her racial background. The novel t
This paper investigates Jonathan Swift’s Directions to Servants (1745) in terms of transgressive corporeality. Less studied and little mentioned by Swift scholars, Directions has been understood as a minor work with little coherence. The purpose of this paper is to newly assert that Directions sharply highlights the very dynamics of Swiftian inversion evinced in his poems. “A Beautiful Young Nymph Going to Bed” (1731), “The Lady’s Dressing Room” (1732), and “The Progress of Beauty” (1720) are al
This paper reconsiders spatial properties of video games as crucial constituent for gameplay through the case study of The Order: 1886, developed by Ready at Dawn and published by Sony for PlayStation 4. The game is built upon the precarious combination of multifarious elements from the tradition of romance literature to the simulation of nineteenth-century London. The first aim of this paper is to analyze these elements, more specifically in what way the motif of heroic quests and romantic allu
