About the Lab

Professor Hyeon-Woong Pyun's research lab specializes in the economic and social impacts of professional sports, focusing on urban mobility, crime dynamics, labor market behavior in sports, and public health. The lab employs rigorous empirical methods—such as instrumental variable regression, difference-in-differences, and stochastic production functions—to analyze how sporting events influence traffic congestion, policing needs, and individual behavior. Research also explores demand heterogeneity in sports fandom and the role of perception in health promotion among middle and older adults. The lab emphasizes evidence-based policy design, particularly in urban planning, labor economics, and public safety.

Professional sporting events and traffic: Evidence from U.S. cities
Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun
SJR Q1Journal of Regional Science

Abstract Sporting events concentrate people in facilities on game day. No evidence currently exists linking sporting events to traffic conditions. We analyze urban mobility data from 25 metropolitan areas with Major League Baseball (MLB) teams over the period 1990–2014. MLB‐related travel accounts for at most 0.5 percent of annual metropolitan area vehicle‐miles traveled (VMT). Instrumental variable regression results indicate MLB attendance causes an increase of about 5 million VMT, about 28,00

Does the presence of professional football cause crime in a city? Evidence from Pontiac, Michigan
Hyunwoong Pyun, Joshua C. Hall
SJR Q2Applied Economics

Using daily panel data from Detroit, we empirically explore the relationship between the National Football League (NFL) and crime in a city. We exploit the natural experiment of the Detroit Lions’ move from Pontiac, Michigan, to downtown Detroit in 2002. Pontiac is used as the treatment city and non-game day crime, other suburban cities, and other cities outside Detroit MSA are used as the comparison groups. Employing a difference-in-difference approach, we find decreases in assaults and vandali

Monopsony Exploitation in Professional Sport: Evidence from Major League Baseball Position Players, 2000–2011
Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun
SJR Q2Managerial and Decision Economics

Some professional athletes still face monopsony power in labor markets, underscoring the importance of estimating players' marginal revenue product to assess its effects. We introduce two new empirical approaches, spline revenue functions and fixed‐effects stochastic production functions, into the standard Scully (1974) approach to marginal revenue product estimation and calculate Monopsony Exploitation Ratios (MERs) for position players in Major League Baseball over the 2001–2011 seasons. Perception of aging in the relation between sport activity and self-rated health in middle and older age - A longitudinal analysis
Eric Faß, Hyunwoong Pyun, Torsten Schlesinger
SJR Q1SSM - Population HealthOA

The results highlight the complexity of the underlying mechanisms as well as the importance of individual and needs-based designed health promotion. Here, public health policy should not solely focus on sport activity, rather it should include target group specific strategies to shape individual perceptions of aging towards a more positive view on aging, while considering the heterogeneity of middle and older age groups.

Disaggregated Attendance Demand: Comparing Daily Ticket Purchasers and Season Ticket Holders in K-League 1
Hojun Sung, Hyunwoong Pyun
SJR Q1Journal of Sports Economics

This study investigates differences in the preferences of daily ticket purchasers and season ticket holders, focusing on outcome uncertainty. Using unique game-level attendance data of both daily ticket purchasers and season ticket holders for every team in the Korean top-tier professional soccer league, we find heterogeneity in demand between daily ticket purchasers and season ticket holders with respect to outcome uncertainty, preference for home team success, team performance, geographical di

Positive Externalities from Professional Football Clubs in the Metropolitan Rhine-Ruhr, Germany: Trickle-Down Effects Associated with Promotion and Relegation
Hyunwoong Pyun, Jeeyoon Kim, Torsten Schlesinger, Luca Matto
SJR Q1SustainabilityOA

Hosting sport events is costly, but the positive impact of hosting sport events has not been studied well. We consider the promotion of physical activity, known as the trickle-down effect, to be a new dimension of this kind of impact. Using exogenous variations in promotion and relegation in the Bundesliga 1, we test the effect of the presence of a Bundesliga 1 club on local non-profit football club membership. Using German city-level annual non-profit sport club membership data from the metropo

Professional Sports Events and Public Spending: Evidence from Municipal Police Budgets
Hyunwoong Pyun, Brad R. Humphreys, Umair Khalil
SJR Q1Journal of Sports EconomicsOA

Prior evidence reveals a causal relationship between sporting events and crime. If sporting events increase crime, they also increase public spending on policing. We analyze the crime-police spending relationship using data from the Annual Survey of Public Employment & Payroll over the periods 1979–1995 and 1997–2010 for a sample of 52 US municipalities with and without teams. Reduced form regression models reveal that police employment increases with the arrival and departure of an NFL team

Which Professional Sport Team Has the Best Marketing Performance in Driving Attendance? The Stochastic Frontier Approach
Hyunwoong Pyun, Jeeyoon Kim, Daehwan Kim
SJR Q3International Journal of Sport FinanceOA

Abstract: While assessment of team-level marketing performance for a professional sport franchise is important for both the team marketer and the researcher to develop a marketing strategy and understand marketing performance, no evidence using a full set of teams for a long period of time currently exists. We propose that marketing performance can be estimated with a stochastic frontier model. Using twenty seasons of Major League Baseball (MLB) attendance data, we estimate the frontier attendan

Voting Dynamics and the Birth of State-owned Casinos in Kansas
Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Collin D. Hodges, Hyunwoong Pyun
SJR Q4Economics bulletin

In 2007 Kansas passed the Kansas Expanded Lottery Act (KELA) which allowed for the construction of four non-tribal casino resorts in four delimited gaming zones throughout the state. Voting on KELA was exceedingly close in both the Kansas State House and State Senate with votes in favor of 52.5% and 55%, respectively. This paper aims to determine if the location of the four gaming zones plays a significant role in determining voting outcomes. Utilizing a probit choice model we conclude that part

Game Day Traffic and Sports: Evidence From Yankee Stadium in the Bronx
황희, Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun
SJR Q1Journal of Sports Economics

This article investigates the impact of sports games on taxi trip times near a stadium in the Bronx. The traffic outcome variable comes from data on individual taxi trips in New York City. These trip-level data contain information on pick-up and drop-off times and locations, and trip distance. We analyze over 280,000 taxi trips on weekday evenings between March and September 2019. Under the assumption that taxi trips represent traffic conditions in the city, the results indicate that travel time
