About the Lab

Professor Hyeonwoo Yang's research lab specializes in oral and maxillofacial imaging, digital dentistry, and translational biomarker research, with a strong focus on applying artificial intelligence and advanced imaging techniques to improve early diagnosis and treatment planning for oral cysts, tumors, and inflammatory conditions. The lab develops innovative, cost-effective, and portable medical devices—such as handheld near-infrared fluorescence imaging systems—for intraoperative guidance and clinical assessment. It also investigates molecular mechanisms in chronic inflammatory diseases like chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, particularly the role of mediators such as periostin and therapeutic responses to glucocorticoids. The lab integrates clinical dentistry with cutting-edge technology, including cone beam CT, intraoral scanning, and deep learning algorithms for medical image analysis.

Patients with odontogenic cysts and tumors may have to undergo serious surgery unless the lesion is properly detected at the early stage. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the real-time object detecting deep convolutional neural network You Only Look Once (YOLO) v2-a deep learning algorithm that can both detect and classify an object at the same time-on panoramic radiographs. In this study, 1602 lesions on panoramic radiographs taken from 2010 to 2019 at Yons

Digital Workflow for Computer‐Guided Implant Surgery in Edentulous Patients with an Intraoral Scanner and Old Complete Denture
Xueyin An, Hyunwoo Yang, Byung‐Ho Choi
SJR Q1Journal of Prosthodontics

A double-scan procedure is commonly performed in the process of fabricating an implant surgical template; however, this entails the disadvantage of recording 2 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans requiring additional time, effort, and costs. The purpose of this article is to introduce a digital protocol to acquire adequate preoperative diagnostic information for a fully edentulous patient, using the existing complete denture with a metal framework, an intraoral scanner, and CBCT.

SJR Q2Neurodegenerative Diseases

AIMS: To elucidate different patterns of progression of midbrain atrophy in patients with Richardson's syndrome (RS), progressive supranuclear palsy-parkinsonism (PSP-P), and Parkinson's disease (PD) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based visual rating indexes. METHODS: We recruited 12 patients with PSP-RS, 12 with PSP-P, and 23 with PD for whom MRIs had been followed up for at least 2 years (mean ± SD, 4.9 ± 1.6 years) after the initial MRI. MRI-based visual rating indexes were used to es

Handheld Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging Device Using Modified Action Cameras for Peri-Operative Guidance of Microvascular Flap Surgery
Hyunwoo Yang, Ji Hong Kim, Woong Nam, Hyung Jun Kim, In–Ho Cha, Dong Wook Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

Indocyanine green near-infrared fluorescence (ICG-NIRF) imaging has recently come into use as a novel method in peri-operative microvascular flap assessment. However, a majority of the many commercial devices launched for clinical use lack mobility, portability, and cost-efficiency and are thus unsuitable for intra-oral applications. This study introduces a cost-effective, customized, handheld NIRF device following principles of ICG-NIRF imaging. Moreover, the novel characteristics of our protot

Non-inferiority study of the efficacy of two hyaluronic acid products in post-extraction sockets of impacted third molars
Hyunwoo Yang, Junghun Kim, Ji Hong Kim, Dong Wook Kim, Hyung Jun Kim
SJR Q2Maxillofacial Plastic and Reconstructive SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid (HA) is well known to exert an anti-inflammatory effect during oral wound healing and is commonly applied after tooth extraction. However, no double-blind randomized controlled study comparing two hyaluronate mouthwash products has been conducted so far. The aim of this study was to comparatively analyze the efficacy of Mucobarrier® and Aloclair® in terms of clinical symptoms. RESULTS: A total of 112 patients were randomly assigned to assess the degree of discomfort,

Perforators Detected in Computed Tomography Angiography for Anterolateral Thigh Free Flap: Am I the Only One Who Feels Inaccurate?
Hyounmin Kim, In–Ho Cha, Hyung Jun Kim, Woong Nam, Hyunwoo Yang, G H Shin, Chena Lee, Dong Wook Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Clinical MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: The number, location, and pattern of perforators in anterolateral thigh(ALT) flap vary and predicting them preoperatively will aid in reconstructing complex head and neck defects. This article suggests guidelines for utilizing CTA imagery to predict perforators of ALT-free flaps. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 53 Korean patients who underwent reconstruction with ALT flap in our department from March 2021 to July 2022. The location, course, origin, and pedicle lengths predicted

The aim of the present study was to examine the conditions, characteristics, and risk factors of level IIb lymph node metastases in oral squamous cell carcinoma and to formulate surgical criteria for level IIb lymph node dissection. We analyzed clinical and pathological records for 541 oral squamous carcinoma patients in relation to level IIb metastasis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to detect risk factors for level IIb lymph node metastasis; a predictive model was built ba

SJR Q1BMC Oral HealthOA

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic mandibular nerve damage resulting from oral surgeries and dental procedures is painful and a formidable challenge for patients and oral surgeons alike, mainly because the absence of objective and quantitative methods for diagnosing nerve damage renders treatment and compensation ambiguous while often leading to medico-legal disputes. The aim of this study was to examine discriminating factors of traumatic mandibular nerve within a specific magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Smartphone usage has become so common that it has reached 2 billion people in the last year. As a result of this, hospitals have started making use of smartphones at various medical sites and research services for patients. This study aimed to establish support for developing a long distance program for patients with implants who have difficulty visiting clinics or with busy modern lives, by using smartphones for oral hygiene management instruction. The data were collected for 12 weeks, from Jul
