About the Lab

Professor Hyun Don Joo's research lab focuses on gastrointestinal and pancreatic diseases, with a strong emphasis on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided interventions for pancreatic neoplasms and advanced endoscopic therapies. The lab also investigates rare extra-intestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease, such as inflammatory myositis, and explores pharmacogenomic factors underlying adverse drug reactions, particularly to antituberculous drugs. Additionally, the lab contributes to architectural and environmental planning for dementia care facilities, integrating geriatric healthcare needs with human-centered design. These interdisciplinary efforts reflect a commitment to improving clinical outcomes and quality of life in aging and complex disease populations.

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Local Therapy for Pancreatic Neoplasms
Jun Seong Hwang, Hyun Don Joo, Tae Jun Song
SJR Q2Clinical EndoscopyOA

Surgical resection is considered the only treatment option for pancreatic cancer and other pancreatic neoplasms with malignant potential, such as neuroendocrine tumors, mucinous cystic neoplasms, and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms. However, only 10%-20% of all patients with pancreatic cancer present with resectable forms of the disease as the symptoms are rarely manifested during the early stages, and the disease tends to progress rapidly. Furthermore, pancreatic surgery is associated

As the population of the elderly increases drastically year by year in Korea, this phenomenon is being a serious problem because of the increasing speed not having been showed ever all over the world. This thesis would propose the space organizing features for well-organized dementia hospital focused on the public living space. The way arranging each function is very important because values of the physical and functional accessibility have a wide range of value as each type of facility. Dermatomyositis: A Rare Extra-intestinal Manifestation of Ulcerative Colitis
Chang-Hyun Park, Na Hye Myong, Hyun Don Joo, Mi Il Kang
SJR Q2Journal of Rheumatic DiseasesOA

Inflammatory myositis as an extra-intestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is rare. Coexistence of im-muno-mediated diseases in patients with IBD and myositis suggests a common etiopathogenic mechanism underlying these conditions. The current report refers to a rare case of a 45-year-old Korean female with ulcerative colitis (UC) who developed dermatomyositis. She presented with skin rash and proximal muscle weakness, and her disease activity of UC was in remission state. Ele

The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of the specialized dementia hospital which can confront in the old age society of Korea changing quickly. We need to make the architectural planning guide including the form determining factors which is useful for the domestic dementia hospital. The factors can be extracted from a database by analysing and investigating the documents of the developed nations equips the excellent dementia hospital. The result of this study is like this : at fi

Allergy Asthma & Respiratory DiseaseOA

Purpose: Adverse cutaneous reactions to antituberculous drugs (ATD), such as maculopapular eruption (MPE), are the most common causes of discontinuation of scheduled treatment of tuberculosis. We previously reported that tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α genetic polymorphism -308G/A is significantly associated with ATD-induced hepatitis. This study aimed to investigate associations between TNF-α -308G/A and ATD-induced MPE.
\nMethods: Patients with ATD-induced MPE and control

Hyun Don Joo, Kyoung Hwang Shin, Sung Hwahn Hahn, Jae Hwan Kong, Suk Bae Kim, Il Han Song
대한내과학회 추계학술발표논문집

Background: Cardiac cirrhosis, an uncommon disease entity of chronic liver injury, usually results from long-standing right-sided heart failure in which an elevated venous pressure was transmitted via inferior vena cava (IVC) and hepatic vein to sinusoids of the liver. Long-term hepatic congestion with relative ischemia can induce centrilobular necrosis, leading to pericentral fi brosis. Case: A 67 year-old male with liver cirrhosis of unknown origin was admitted with pretibial pitting edema, as

Nutmeg liver cardiac cirrhosis caused by constrictive pericarditis
Kyoung Hwang Shin, Hyun Don Joo, Il Han Song
SJR Q2The Korean Journal of Internal MedicineOA

A 67-year-old man was referred to our emergency room for evaluation of exertional dyspnea and pretibial pitting edema of recent origin. At admission, neck vein engorgement was evident. Electrocardiography revealed a typical atrial flutter with 2:1 conduction; the serum cardiac enzyme levels were within normal limits. The laboratory findings were as follows: white blood cell 3,800/mm3 , hemoglobin 13.2 g/dL, platelets 89,000/mm3 , aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase 68/48 U/L, pro

대한내과학회 추계학술발표논문집

Background: Here we report a rare case of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), which has been managed with repeated antibiotics for 2 years under the diagnosis of recurrent pneumonia. Results: 37 years old women has suffered from persistent sputum, cough and dyspnea since 4 years ago. Antibiotics were prescribed repeatedly because chest X-ray showed pneumonic consolidation for 2 years. She was referred because her symptoms and abnormal chest X-ray findings were not improved even with
