About the Lab

Professor Hyun Sook Kwon's research lab specializes in natural product chemistry, with a focus on the isolation, structural elucidation, and bioactivity evaluation of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants and fungi. The lab investigates coumarins, lignans, phenylpropanoids, and other phytochemicals for their potential anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, and enzyme-inhibitory activities. A key emphasis is placed on developing culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials for Arabic-speaking learners of Korean, particularly in teaching Hangul script and pronunciation. The research integrates phytochemistry with pharmacological screening and educational innovation.

SJR Q4HeterocyclesOA

Two new coumarin derivatives were isolated together with three known coumarins, artelin (3), isofraxidin (4), and scoploetin (5) from the bark of Ailanthus altissima (Simaroubaceae). New coumarin derivatives were elucidated as terpenylated coumarins, named altissimacoumarin A (1) and altissimacoumarin B (2), respectively. Trans-Configuration of between C-2' and C-9' in compound (1) was clearly confirmed by NOESY experiments.

SJR Q1International Journal of Molecular SciencesOA

Osteosarcoma, which has poor prognosis after metastasis, is the most common type of bone cancer in children and adolescents. Therefore, plant-derived bioactive compounds are being actively developed for cancer therapy. Artemisia apiacea Hance ex Walp. is a traditional medicinal plant native to Eastern Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. Vitexicarpin (Vitex), derived from A. apiacea, has demonstrated analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antitumour, and immunoregulatory properties; however, there ar

Tyrosinase Inhibitory Activities of Safrole fromMyristica fragransHoutt.
Soo‐Jeong Cho, Hyun Sook Kwon
SJR Q4Journal of Applied Biological ChemistryOA

Five phenylpropanoids (1-5), a benzofuran neolignan (6), two 8-O-4'-neolignans (7-8), and five tetrahydrofuran lignans (9-13) were isolated from a methanol extract of Myristica fragrans seeds. The structures of 1-13 were determined by 1Hand 13C-NMR spectroscopic data analyses and a comparison with the literature data. Compound 3 was isolated for the first time from this plant. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase. Among them, safrole (1) show

SJR Q1Molecules and CellsOA

Aggregates of disease-causing proteins dysregulate cellular functions, thereby causing neuronal cell loss in diverse neurodegenerative diseases. Although many in vitro or in vivo studies of protein aggregate inhibitors have been performed, a therapeutic strategy to control aggregate toxicity has not been earnestly pursued, partly due to the limitations of available aggregate models. In this study, we established a tetracycline (Tet)-inducible nuclear aggregate (β23) expression model to screen po
