About the Lab

Professor Hyung-jung Lee's research lab focuses on aging, mental health, and well-being in later life, with a particular emphasis on interpersonal relationships, sensory impairments, and end-of-life experiences. The lab investigates how social interactions—especially within family and spousal relationships—affect psychological and physical health outcomes among older adults. Key research directions include intergenerational exchange, advance care planning, and the impact of sensory and cognitive decline on quality of life in older populations. The lab employs longitudinal data from major national studies to explore health disparities and resilience in aging populations.

Positive, Negative, and Ambivalent Interactions With Family and Friends: Associations With Well‐being
Hyo Jung Lee, Maximiliane E. Szinovacz
SJR Q1Journal of Marriage and the Family

Although the relationship between social relationships and mental health is well established, debate continues about the relative importance of specific sources (spouses, children, relatives, friends) as well as of positive and negative interactions. The authors examined the associations of positive, negative, and ambivalent interactions with life satisfaction and depressive symptoms for spouses, children, relatives, and friends, using data from the 2008 Health and Retirement Study ( N = 6,418).

Health and Well-Being in the Year before Death: The Association with Quality of Life and Care at the End-of-Life
Hyo Jung Lee, Brent J. Small, William E. Haley
SJR Q1Journal of Aging and Health

Objective: We examined whether older adults’ health and well-being during their final year of life predicts end-of-life (EOL) quality of life (QOL) and quality of care (QOC). Methods: Using data from deceased participants ( n = 1125) in the 2011–2015 National Health and Aging Trends Study, we performed latent class analysis to identify profiles of health and well-being, and we examined the association between these classes and EOL QOL and QOC. Results: Four classes were identified: healthy/happy

Hyo Jung Lee, Bon Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Aging and Health

Objective We examined the formal and informal advance care planning (ACP) patterns of older couples and determined how these patterns are associated with individual and spousal characteristics. Methods Using data from the 2014 and 2016 Health and Retirement Study, we performed latent class analysis to identify ACP patterns and multinomial regression models to describe characteristics of older couples ( N = 2195 couples). Results We identified four ACP patterns: high engaging couple (47%); high e

How Large Is the Gap Between Self-Report and Assessed Mental Health and Does It Impact Older Adult Mental Health Service Utilization?
Hyo Jung Lee, Elizabeth Dugan
SJR Q2Journal of Gerontological Social Work

We examined the relationship between self-reported and assessed mental health status and service use, using data from the Health and Retirement Study (N = 9,547). Twelve percent and thirty percent had inaccurate perceptions of their mood and memory status, respectively. No significant difference was found in the likelihood of service use between older adults who were unaware of current depressive symptoms and those who self-reported problems but had no assessed symptoms. Older adults who scored

South Korea implemented interventions to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic with discovery of the first case in early 2020. Mathematical modeling designed to reflect the dynamics of disease transmission has been shown to be an important tool for responding to COVID-19. This study aimed to review publications on the structure, meth od, and role of mathematical models focusing on COVID-19 transmission dynamics in Korea. In total, 42 papers published be tween

There are lots of materials on Susinsa and Official Observation Mission in Korea and Japan. Although the lists and articles were published by some researchers, we should investigate the data research more, and organize the materials. This research should be more detailed with translation tasks.
